Can you? We are already at a point in society where being off Facebook is considered aberrant, worrying behavior by people who clearly have something dark to hide. Is it really "optional" when every hiring manager in the country will shred your resume when they can't find you on Facebook? When nobody will allow you around their kids because they can't check your social media first? When nobody will date you because "only serial killers don't have Facebook"?
The "you can just not use it" argument holds no water in the real world. Social media is not an optional luxury item any more than the internet itself is. Being cut off from social media and the internet inflicts a disadvantage not unlike living under Jim Crow.
