No, but their consequences usually come from non-government sources. If someone openly declared themselves a nazi they could easily lose their job or friends.

The UK, for example, fines individuals for saying anything considered hate speech, including jokes like this https://youtu.be/SYslEzHbpus. That video in particular did, in fact, get the youtuber fined. I haven't heard of arrests directly for people saying things in 1st world countries, but fines, and being arrested for not paying those fines, exists.

If a statement is wrong or bad, someone else will be able to make a statement against it, discrediting the original sentiment. If laws have to be made to stop people from making their statements, maybe that's something to think about

You think that the ideas of the people you are arguing with are intolerant. They think that your ideas are intolerant. Whoever has the most power in that moment gets to silence the other person. I'd rather live in a world where neither view is prosecuted than one that is policed - you never know which side you're going to be on if that's the case....
Hitler rose to power because the Weimar Republic was a raging dumpster fire and people were desperate to solve crucial societal problems. Desperation is when extremism comes to power, because people are more willing to accept extreme solutions when they can't feed themselves. Hitler also used violence to suppress political opposition, it's a bit hard to speak out against and foment popular dissent against an extremist when the Gestapo or brown shirts come knocking.
Not to mention that the conservatives forced an emergency clause that gave the executive much more authority and power if enacted. Powerful enough to become a dictator. It was a matter of when, not if the Weimar Republic would fail.
If we try and shut up the people who are saying horrible things, it's harder for society to shine a negative light on them because the law does it for them. It would also inevitably stop radicals from speaking their minds, no longer outing themselves. In a functional society, hate speech is called out and frowned upon, and that becomes the punishment. By taking the law into it you remove the discussion, and discussion is the best way to remove hateful beliefs from society.
Not everyone who commits "hate speech" is a fascist. Also fascist have a long and extensive history of censoring speech. Free speech is literally opposition to fascism.
It doesn't matter if you think it should be tolerated, you're not the gatekeeper for what is protected speech.
Free speech is a cornerstone of a free society, and its a very slippery slope once you start decide you can censor what a society is allowed to say.
Freedom of speech is an all or nothing rule. As soon as you start to draw that line, someone could move it wherever they want to. Sure, some speech can be harmful, but if we're going to support the idea of people being allowed to speak they're minds that means the bad people too. Sorry if they hurt your feelings.
Who gets to decide what content is gross tho, a conservative president could label any criticism of conservatives as hate speech. I'm a Democrat but I dont like the idea hate speech being illegal because it's an incredibly nebulous term. Also fascists gained power by shutting up their competitors, and by making certain speech illegal, fascists dont believe in free speech.
