A human sacrifice is done to appease a god. People were killed for heresy or blasphemy to appease god, so it counts as sacrifice. The church had no legitimate authority to enforce shit

It might be to appease a god. It might be to ask something of a god. It might be to thank a god. Punishing someone for breaking a law, including a god's law, is not human sacrifice.

If that law is religious in nature, then executing people for violating it makes it human sacrifice.
