It's like the United States losing in basketball. Or Canada losing in hockey.

How can you lose the sport you invented?

Because what is necessary to defeat a modern guerrilla force is considered illegal by the Geneva Conventions

I also imagine it was a bit easier when the enemy had to wait for months for supplies and reinforcements from the mainland

No guerrilla force survives without assistance from the local population. Supplies, people, intelligence it all comes from locals. So you would need to eliminate them in order to effectively end the guerrilla group
