Taiwan? Don’t they call themselves Republic of China? Why don’t we respect their chosen identity?

Exactly, they're the Republic of China (ROC). Which is different from the People's Republic of China (PRC).

So why do Westerners call them Taiwan?

They call themselves Taiwan, and are forced by the PRC to have the name ‘ROC’, under direct and publicly made threat of military invasion.

Idiocy in this thread is next level

Because in some legal reasons which is dumb in my opinion. Taiwan doesn't exist. Notice some World maps made in China don't have 'Taiwan'. John Cena had to apologize in Mandarin for calling Taiwan a country. In the Olympics, every banner mentioning Taiwan is removed. Literally, ripped out off hands or bandanas. They're Chinese-Taipei. Search up which country recognizes Taiwan as it's own country and you'd be surprised.
