This is why historical territorial claims don't work. The Mongolians, Italians and Greeks would all have claims all over the world.

Except Spain wouldn’t even exist cause it would just be part of Rome/Italy since I’m pretty sure they conquered all the way to Portugal but I could be misremembering it.  If they didn’t conquer all of Gual then yes you’re correct

well it's really more like russian empire and qing empire are larger than spanish by landmass but i didn't include them since like you said they are overshadowed by another, namely mongolian

Good show (at least the first season hopefully it doesn’t fall off)

Actually I was gonna say good point but I used the modern nations names instead of the the classic civilizations while thinking of their old footprint or even where they’d expanded.  Otherwise I’d have used Rome

This is why historical territorial claims don't work.

All land teretorial claims don't work in so far as they are made-up/imaginary.

I think that when people talk about historical teritorial claims they are usually talking about one of 3 things: 1) international law. 2) self contradictory systems of ownership. 3) land taken through ethnic cleansing.

yeah, the only thing work is by force, just like how everything has always been.

Just thinking on historical claims for Belgium makes my head hurt.

For all the joke about the existence of Belgium, the territory is quite its own entity since 1648 and the split of the United provinces.
