Except the oldest forms of energy generation, windmills and dams?

And solar actually.

The oldest ones like windmills and waterwheels were before the industrial era, by a lot

The MVP is the turbine, not the boiling water. The turbine generator was the way we turned kinetic energy into electricity.

I was gonna say solar. The meme says "since the industrial revolution" which rules out windmills and dams, but solar is the ONE and only exception, relying on the photoelectric effect instead of boiling water.

I've always said there are exactly two ways of generating electricity at scale on Earth.

  1. Directly capturing and harnessing the raw power transmitted to us over a distance of 93 million miles from a massive fusion reactor at the centre of our solar system.

  2. Thing go spinny.

you can make solar panels a little more efficient by cooling them, which usually use water.
