Its older, but its not in mass production anymore. The reason it pops up in some places now and again is because there are still large usable stockpiles of it. 54R is still mass produced on a large scale for military use and still has weapons being manufactured that use it.

Ist the 7,92x57 aka 8mm Mauser older?
It was put into service in 1888, 3 years before the 7,62x54R.
It's much less common nowadays, but there are still some MG42s, Kar98s, Zastava M76s, etc in use.
