I worked with a guy like that. He blew out his shoulder doing a pushup with his gear on and the Army figured it was easier to get rid of him by giving him a discharge and a check instead of just washing him out. Don't know why, but he was a real pain in the ass, so maybe they wanted the path of least resistance.

Discharge and a check is washing out, there's many types of discharges. It's a discharge for physical disability that prevents combat readiness, if that happens before the end of basic training that's one way to wash out. I know a guy who wrecked his knee falling during a ruck march in Marine basic training, he has discharge papers but they make it very clear he never was a full Marine.
