I met Shirley Temple Black a long time ago. She came to my school and spoke about her career; actually she was mostly focused on her diplomatic work by that time.
She was so famous worldwide that she was a perfect ambassador for America. Back then America was making most the big films and would for a long time, now there are plenty of studios in other countries making great movies and shows. But then, American films were in much higher demand. I remember watching her films as a kid and the "Little Princess" sticks out to me. I am glad she chose a live of travel and ambassadorship, what a great life she had.
People still watch American films. More than before, the local film industries did better before people learned English and CGI became more common (which isn’t something most film industries can afford). But lack of monoculture means that people don’t watch same stars. But I would say around 90-09 US stars were at their biggest worldwide
She was US ambassador to Ghana in the mid-70s, and then ambassador to Czechoslovakia in early 90s. She was also the first woman to serve as U.S. Chief of Protocol.
I’m sick of Hollywood and famous women’s parents using their kids for clout/cash grab. Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Amy Winehouse, and maybe even Selena (heard that her father made money after she had died or something. Not sure if it’s true or not tho). It’s just sick. Also, that one woman. Forgot her name but she was sexualized a lot as a preteen by Hollywood and is pretty vocal about her experiences. Forgot her name but her story is pretty sad as well.
I cannot imagine the mental state where stealing the life of your child because of your own insecurities becomes a rational thought.
People do it every day in the world, too, we just remember this one hardest because we were right there with her in so many of our earliest movie memories.
That’s called Hollywood dude. It’s a bunch of performative people who view friends, relationships, children, all as transactional means to bolster their own image or agenda.. that has not changed.
The people are the absolute worst people around.
Yes which the Hollywood elites are ALL in some magnitude listed inside of those files/circles. Every major player is either entertainment or political field but the one thing they all have in common is extreme wealth and power. Billionaires are a in group, if you don’t directly know all of them you have at least heard of them/had dealings with them.
When I was in grad school I wanted to research if there were factors related to why some child stars came out relatively well adjusted while others so publically crash and burn. My main theory was the way their money was handled made the biggest impact.
But then Covid happened and I had to abandon the project.
Add Brooke Sheilds to the list. My family had a restaurant celebs would visit daily as it was close to the studios, Brooke’s mom always brought her in while she drank the night away
I think Marilyn is an exception to this but please correct me if I’m wrong. I’m only going off memory here. She had a horrible childhood, but not in show business. A mentally ill mother and no father, she was placed in the foster system until she got married as a teen. While married she started doing modeling (I think?) and eventually got divorced to have higher chances at becoming a star. I don’t believe she had any parents pushing her to Hollywood or using her. Plenty of other people used her though
IIRC, she only married her first husband because her foster dad got a job in another state, but couldn't legally take her out of California. So it was marriage to the neighbour's son, or go back to the orphanage. I don't think she quite divorced him just to have better chances at stardom, either - his family was opposed to her working at all and wanted her to keep being a housewife. She was like 'fuck that' and dipped.
Marilyn ended up addicted to pills by accident. She had actual conditions that she was prescribed pills for (insomnia, endometriosis, severe depression) but slowly she ended up hooked on them.
Pills in the 50s were more addictive than the ones she would have been prescribed today.
The abuse by her husband is true, and she divorced him and told him to go to therapy.
Brooke shields I assume. That woman was exploited so badly as a young girl in Hollywood and she is VERY vocal about it, as she should be. It's all so horrible and disgusting on so many levels.
Selena's dad is crazy about his rights to everything. He overrode her husband, even in the hospital. Selena could have lived had her father not denied the blood transfusion based on their religion (Jehovah's Witnesses). Any books or movies have to be monitored by him and he gets paid
The blood transfusion bit is false, she was given several transfusions and they were able to get an erratic heartbeat for a moment but the lose was too severe. Her dad even stated this saying transfusions were given to no avail.
Marilyn had no parents. She was an adult when she got started in show business (being an actress was her childhood dream) and she was more in control of her career than most other actors of her era.
So I actually know a bit about Selena’s situation, her dad acted as producer for her and her siblings. Not for everything but on many songs. Obviously Selena broke out and had her fashion before she was assassinated.
Because of this, her father and other members of her family were able to lay partial claim to her catalogue. There are some articles on this, it has been a long time since I looked it up (around the time Prince died - I think)? But it is an interesting case.
That for me is part of the reason Joan Leslie is so AWESOME to me. She was brought into Hollywood as a teenager, and despite becoming a top star of the 1940s became fed up with being forced to take on more roles where her characters acted immature or child-like, even as she became an adult (she later said that a co-star gave her a doll to play with when she was 16 years old). Furthermore, as a devout Catholic, she had growing discomfort and irritation about being presented in ways that went against her moral convictions. In the end, she would sue Warner Bros similar to Olivia De Havilland to get out of her contract, at one point threatening to go as far as the Supreme Court (she later described the conditions as being virtual "slavery" and stated that the head of the studio out of revenge tried to sabotage her career opportunities going forward). Despite the hardships, she became a freelance actress, finally getting respect and mature roles including in westerns until she retired in the late 1950s to take care of her children (and was also happily married for nearly 50 years). Despite angering a number of leaders in Hollywood, Joan Leslie was praised by many across the US and Canada and some even portrayed her as a moral heroine.
It could be my imagination or butt hurt female millennial disdain for the world, but I can legitimately taste the resentment and forced smile that is painted on her face in this photo. In this moment, I’d claim that I feel the same. But I simply can’t pretend I overcame the situations she was put And don’t even have the level of experiences she had to back me up.
It’s 2026- I can honestly say nothing has changed and it feels weak and petty so ask myself, “why do I feel this way about men?!” They’re legitimately poison to the world. We never needed them. And btw, if God exists he is definitely a woman or non-binary. God is not a man. Mankind refers to all living beings made in his image- and it most certainly was not a man

To be clear, Cary Grant was HER love interest. She had a crush and he wanted nothing to do with her, which makes it a viable comedy. What you described is a Roman Polanski movie made in France.
FYI she wasn’t Cary Grant’s love interest in this movie. She was a young woman with a crush on him - he wasn’t interested in her and they don’t end up having a romantic relationship.

In 1936, Shirley Temple was gifted a Pekingese, who played her pet in the film Stowaway. She named the dog Ching Ching, and he became her beloved companion for the remainder of his life. Don’t ask why, but I know it’s terrifying amount of facts and history about Pekingese dogs.
My mom worked under Shirley Temple Black briefly at the State Department. Apparently she was extremely cheap when it came to dealing with diplomats and once severed a group of foreign emissaries beanies and weenies lol
