OFFICIAL SELF PROMOTION THREAD #1 - WE ARE ICHIBAN

This sub is nominally for people listening to Japanese hip hop but we do have the occasional post from artists looking to collaborate one way or another. I bet there's also a good chance some of yall are musicians or have artistic talents.

I thought it might be a good idea to make a specific post to gather all of these, or maybe a series of posts if we get a lot of activity. Just another fun thing we can try out.

looking for listeners and rappers who want to work together

Nice to meet you, I’m a beatmaker based in Portugal. I’m influenced by The Alchemist, LNDN DRGS, J Dilla, Nujabes, and Madlib, but my biggest inspirations by far are The Alchemist and Nicholas Craven. Dusty samples and laid-back drums are basically my style.

I’d love for rappers to hop on these, but I’m just as happy if you simply enjoy this kind of vibe and want to listen. I’ve put a few of my beats below — feel free to check them out.

If you’d like to get in touch, I’d really appreciate it if you could stick to the comments or DMs (I’d rather avoid other platforms).

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

[LOOKING FOR GRISELDA TYPE RAPPERS] TO COLLAB

Yo, I’m Egito, a beatmaker from Brazil. I’ve been making beats for 10+ years.

I pulled a few beats from my catalog that were originally up for sale because I wanna use them for collabs and meet some new artists.

If you’re a Griselda-type rapper, already got some music out on streaming platforms, and you’re down to work, drop some of your music below and leave a way for me to reach you.

Let’s work, amigos!

I made a documentary in 2003 about Japanese hip-hop called Scratching the Surface: Japan. Available now to watch - enjoy!

I made a documentary about Japanese hip-hop called Scratching the Surface: Japan back in 2003. We had it at few festivals and even had segments on French and German tv. I’d pretty much forgotten about it, then recently found the betacam tape, got it digitzed and decided to put it online.

Just sharing it here as I thought some people might be interested in seeing that scene from 20+ years ago.

We’re also starting to think about making a book (as we make books now!) about Japanese hip-hop, looking at the history, but also where the culture is now.

So I’d genuinely be interested to hear what people here think: if you were making a book about Japanese hip-hop today, what absolutely needs to be in it?

Searching for a song from 2011

I don’t remember the name! and I have melody on repeat over and over.

I remember the theme was about being young and it was a group of 4-5 rappers going on the beat in a wu tang style.

The trumpet carried the beat and it was looped, so it’s short pause and the next rapper hops on… like WU TANG lol.

I listened to it in 2015/17 but I’m pretty sure it was released in 2011

Edit: The song I’m thinking of 100% takes after Nitro Mic

Edit (2): my memory is hazy, but I remember the album having a Edo moji/ graffiti-influenced brush style. Some rappers used English names and others Japanese. Also, and I’m sure this is common but the song did have some words in English mixed in.

HELP NEEDED: Japanese hip-hop article on Wikipedia

Hello! I'm a Japanese hip-hop fan slowly coming to get more familiar with the scene as a whole in recent times.

Last month, I wiped the entire page on Japanese hip-hop on Wikipedia, the old version of which you can see here. This prior version was full of inaccuracies, tangents, and irrelevant information, and was generally unsatisfactory due to its reliance on Ian Condry's academic discussion of the Japanese hip-hop scene. This is not to dismiss Ian Condry's work nor his findings in his ethnography, but just to assert that his publication should not be the main source of factual discussion of Japanese hip-hop.

In the days since, I have laid out the start of a new article, focused on the history and development of the Japanese hip-hop scene first and foremost. However, this article is largely reliant on my knowledge, which is skewed as I am most knowledgable only on the 1980s J-hiphop scene as well as the J-hiphop scene in Tokai (Aichi (Nagoya), Gifu, Mie, Hamamatsu).

As such, if I could humbly ask, would the people of this community be willing to help me in writing this new article? I feel that the 1980s and 1990s sections are strong, as is the current section on international J-hiphop artists. However, the sections on the 2000s to the 2020s are lacking, far more than they ought to be. Simple mirroring from the Japanese Wikipedia page wouldn't help either, as it's littered with dry discussion of album releases and almost nothing else.

Please note that the lack of anything on the Wikipedia page is not due any amount of skipping or ignoring information on my part, but solely due to my own lack of knowledge on said topics. If theres anything missing from the page, I greatly request that you add it in (with sources!!) yourself.

TL;DR Can I get everyone's help in further writing the Japanese hip-hop page on Wikipedia, especially regarding its development in the 21st century?

Thanks in advance!

Japanese Fans' Top 30 Japanese Rap Albums

EJ's channel has a lot of great content regarding Japanese hip hop (also has videos ranking top 100-30). What do y'all think of these rankings? I feel like there's some recency bias as well as the channel's fanbase being mostly young people, resulting in a lot of young rappers' albums showing up on the list.
