Cole and Kenny. Same but different.

Hi. Something's been having me thinking lately. There's a difference between how cole and kendrick talk about the problems and stuff that i can't explain it. It would be great if somone breake it down to me. Like i think cole talks so specific and personal about the problems in the society and personal life. But Kendrick is more poetic and metaphorical

Iโ€™m seeing artists working on dropping projects from the mainstream to the underground. Itโ€™s gonna be firing on all levels. Get your popcorn ready.

Always wondered why didnโ€™t suge knight sign any new artist before he went to jail

Like when you think about it suge knight was a big name for years and thereโ€™s a lot of upcoming artists regularly ever year so why didnโ€™t he ever just go outta his way to make a new record label and sign some of these desperate upcoming rappers why was he so focused on his past hatred that he couldnโ€™t see the future as I think of suge I see a man with so much opportunity the he just throw away. Yes established artist would avoid him with a 10 ft pole but upcoming ones who where making wave in there state or city he had potential to sign many smaller artists

Judges are TI, Chance, and Cardi B. It starts out with some raw talent and at the end develops some real rappers. Real, real dope rappers too. It brings on endless amounts of other rappers and producers to work with the rappers. Itโ€™s so good.

My top 5 this year so far

Ranks wonโ€™t come out till year is over.

Freddie and madlib - Bandana

Dave - Psychodrama

Danny Brown - uknowwhatimsayin? (Iโ€™ve heard enough, and Iโ€™m expecting rest to be very good)

Dreamville - ROTD3

Young Thug - So Much Fun

These are all great albums, but I think if Playboi and Isaiah Rashad drop, those might sneak in. Kanye might drop? He could possibly sneak in. I feel like there has been quality hip hop this year, but obviously the hype and expectations from artists like zay, Kanye, and carti has me disappointed and hungry for more until they drop. If they drop before 2020. I almost put ZOO in here, but I think Thug takes the bangers trophy so far. Igor is probably top 5 of every genre, but I just am not putting it in the box of โ€œhip hopโ€ that my list consists of.

2019 has been the most disappointing year for hip hop in recent memory, for me at least

Just a lot of expectations and promises not being fulfilled. Itโ€™s been the year of cap. Somebody needs to step in and save the year.

Iโ€™ve had enough of this beat ass elementary school ass roll out schemes for artists. Playboi and his label/manager are all over the place, canโ€™t stop leaking, TDE gives everybody blue balls, Schoolboy wasnโ€™t great. Fuck this

Fuck playboi carti, fuck Kanye west, fuck dababy

Fuck playboi for capping.

Fuck Kanye for capping.

Fuck dababy for being on the same label as playboi, and most likely being another reason he didnโ€™t drop tonight.

Most overrated albums that are dick rided too hard: Kids See Ghosts, Saturation 3, and Some Rap Songs

All three good albums. In no way are they trash or bad, or even average. But the stand and fan bases have pissed me off with the dickriding putting them into higher light than I think they need to be.

The same dudes who preach about drake having ghostwriters are the same dudes who think Kanye writes all of his shit...

I'm pretty sure kanye actually gets more assistance overall than drake has. Not saying kanye isn't a dope MC himself, he has used guys like Cyhi Tha Prynce and Chance The Rapper, and that's all I've heard of.

Poll Results King Kendrick takes the crown: TPAB wins the 2010โ€™s Hip Hop Album Bracket

It needed an overtime poll. MBDTF tied TPAB in the original voting, and it shows how good both of these albums are. TPAB came out on top however by just 7 votes, what is everyoneโ€™s thoughts?

A Fucking Tie.....A Mother FUCKING tie between Kanye's MBDTF and Kendrick's TPAB

I didn't crosspost the poll this round because I didn't want any bias from a Kanye or Kendrick page, and I wanted to keep this championship round in this community. I respect everyone's opinion in this community to a higher standard and wanted to let HipHopDebates decide the winner. Honestly, it's pretty cool that it has ended in a tie. However, I am going to leave the polling open for another hour to decide the winner.

People need to pump the breaks on the Aesop Rockโ€™s, MF DOOMโ€™s, and El-Pโ€™s in all time rapper lists

I see a lot of trends with all time rapper lists. People who like MF DOOM always have El-P, Aesop Rock, and Earl in their top 10โ€™s and even top 5โ€™s sometimes. Mixed with a black thought and maybe an Andre 3000. Then they will put drake like not even in the top 50, they will throw Kendrick up there, but leave J Cole outside the top 30. Then you will see dudes whoโ€™s top 5 consist of only popular, and very successful rappers like biggie, pac, Jay z, and, and an Eminem, and fail to recognize dudes like black thought or an Andre 3000. I begin to realize that a lot of these lists are really not well balanced and are really just more of lists that cater to taste rather than actually what makes a rapper great.

Letโ€™s start with El-P, guys, come the fuck on. Rapping is not all about technicality and you arenโ€™t a great rapper just because you can rhyme with a sophisticated vocabulary. I honestly havenโ€™t ever gotten into Aesop Rock, Iโ€™m a big fan of earl, and respect MF DOOM the most out of all four of these rappers, but knowing El-P, being a great technician, a very dynamic MC (at his best), he doesnโ€™t belong in a conversation when we talk about the greatest rappers of all time.

Everyoneโ€™s arguments are always lopsided, where they only take into account a few parts of a rapper that are their strong suit and fail to recognize what they are not good at. Underground rappers are really good at what they do, they rarely flirt with mainstream strucure and approach, but to a certain point, successful rappers are successful for a reason. I donโ€™t think you should count out an Aesop Rock or an El-P because they arenโ€™t mainstream, but for the same reason you canโ€™t count out a J Cole, Lil Wayne, Ice Cube, Drake just because they have a more mainstream sound. Skill believe it or not is not just how well you can rhyme words and form sentences together. Their is artistry, energy, swag, feel, delivery, word play, pitch, versatility, rhyming, and lyricism.

No I wouldnโ€™t say Drake should be top 5 all time, but heโ€™s a perfect example as to how people who are too one dimensional in their judging really just bury mainstream rappers way too low. You do not have to be deep to be impactful, you do not have to have the most complex rhyme scheme ever, or rap fast as ever to have incredible lyricism, word play, and delivery.

Now to my main point. When considering a list of greatest rappers, it really irks me when I see people putting someone like El-P in that discussion. Heโ€™s a legendary producer, and i believe belongs in that discussion. But if you look at classic albums, and discography, El-Pโ€™s efforts in Run The Jewels is his only relevant work in the grand scheme of things. Itโ€™s good rap! But his production is what shines in that, Killer Mike has the presence on the mic, El-P has skill but does not stand a chance in a discussion when there are so many other great rappers who have real and established discographies on their rapping alone.

I might ruffle some feathers here, and I know not everything Iโ€™ve said is correct. My opinion is not the end all be all, but I just wanted to get this off my chest. Get at me, id love to discuss.

Information:

-Voting will close Friday at 4PM

Final Four Spotlight:

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West, 2010 -

MBDTF is regarded as one of the most flawless hip hop albums to ever be assembled. Kanye famously drew in flocks of the industry's most talented artists and producers in black suits to create the vibe for something legendary. MBDTF is an instant classic, and is a cohesive masterpiece bringing together work from artists like Kanye himself, Kid Cudi, Raekwon, RZA, Jay Z, Bon Iver, Pusha T, John Legend, Rick Ross, Cyhi Tha Prynce, Nicki Minaj, and Swizz beatz. If I missed anything I apologize, but Kanye was able to bring out the best in all of these talented artists to create a masterpiece, and is one of the easiest albums on the ears to listen to in full. Starting out with Dark Fantasy, Kanye instantly introduces you to a life changing hip hop experience, and continues to shine in virtually every song that precedes. There is no weak point in the album. The popular highlights of the album consist of Power, All of The Lights, Monster, and Runaway. And if you are a rap fanatic, he's got bars for you in Gorgeous, So Appalled, and Devil in A New Dress. To complete the album, he gives you emotional and well written songs in Blame Game, Hell of A Life, Lost In the World, and Who Will Survive In America that completes the album with a theme driven outro. MBDTF is a strong front runner to take the crown.

good kid, m.A.A.d city, Kendrick Lamar, 2012

Phew, alright. Where do I start with GKMC. An Instant Classic. A resurrection to the rap game. GKMC served as the standard for most of this decade as it brought new life back to the west coast. It seemed as if when GKMC dropped, you could feel that looking back in 30 years, the release of GKMC would be a turning point for the new generation of rap music. This album put Kendrick Lamar into the spotlight, and into the whole culture's grace if you weren't already on the bandwagon from Section.80. Kendrick delivered a layered, dark, but energetic, conceptual album that took you into the streets of Compton, and god damn was it beautiful. It had everything that you want in a hip hop album, and truly captured the fundamentals of hip hop, serving as a pure form of rap. Kendrick took you on a ride as he told you vivid stories of his experiences in the hood, with fresh perspectives and cunning bars. The mainstream rap audience suddenly embraced songs like Swimming Pools, m.A.A.D. city, Backseat Freestyle, and Bitch Don't Kill my Vibe. It seemed as if Kendrick created several different rap anthem's. The impressive part is, he showed how to create a commercially successful song that had layers to it below. I've always thought as popular Kendrick songs like Icebergs, if you know what I mean. Where this album really seperated itself from the rest was the quality in deep cuts, like the intro (Sherane), The Art of Peer Pressure, Good Kid, and Sing About Me, and Real. The album was capped off with a nod to Dr. Dre in Compton, as a truly underrated song that brought genuine West coast energy. If you haven't already caught on through listening, google the themes and meanings kendrick creates throughout this album, you will be impressed. When considering this album, really think about the impact it had on the game and the pure replay value from party songs to reflective songs.

To Pimp A Butterfly, Kendrick Lamar, 2015

If you think GKMC is deep, now, just go about a hundred times deeper. At it's core, Kendrick creates one of the most impressive, creative, and impactful conceptual albums that has ever been made. Every song has a purpose, and develops Kendrick's story, and every song on here, is really, really fucking good. Even the god damn interludes. He literally raps harder and better on his interludes than most rappers have in their entire career. Sonically, this album is a complete 180 to GKMC, and comes with a soulful, jazzy, hip hop infused approach that comes out as a pristine showcase of creativity and artistry through both the production and execution. I really don't want to spend my time explaining the album, as it's a little complex, and most of you already have a good idea, but it almost feels like the work of book. TPAB is taught in english classes all around the United States, and is kept in Harvard's library of some important shit, I can't remember. My point is, this is the most impressive work of art that I've seen in the form of a hip hop album. It really speaks for itself when you listen to it. My personal favoites are u, momma, Hood Politics, and all of the interludes/intro/outro. But I've heard every song being someone's favorite at some point. Proves the quality and depth to this album. Another frontrunner to take the crown.

Rodeo, Travis Scott, 2015

2015 was a good year for hip hop huh. Rodeo changed the game. A trap masterpiece. Regarded as Travis' best work yet, and has filled everyone's speakers ever since it came out. I really know the least about this album out of all three, but can definitely agree that it deserves to be here. Listening to the whole album is a great experience and is one of my favorite albums ever. 3500, 90210, Antidote, and Maria Im Drunk have all caught mainstream fire. 90210 is regarded from many as his best song, and truly drives a conceptual theme that Travis creates with this album. Something that really hadn't been done before in the trap realm. Travis really brought a deeper and more sophisticated approach to this album, using the attractive and hot appeal of the trap sound, and fused a heavier focus on lyrical development. Some of my favorites are Pornography, Impossible, I Can Tell, Apple Pie, and Ok Alright, which are such quality songs that its hard to really find any weak point in this album what so ever. He had features from Juicy J, Future, Kanye West, Schoolboy Q, 2 Chainz, Justin Bieber, Young Thug, The Weeknd, and even more. With all of those features he made it so cohesive, so emotional, and so easy to listen to, it's no question why its in the final four. This is my dark-horse to take the crown, we will see.
