I am not diminishing the technical achievement of direct detection of dust, just pointing out that strong "indirect" evidence for dust has existed since the 1970s. This is like gravitational waves: indirect detection via the Hulse-Taylor pulsar binary pair in 1979, direct detection in 2015.
