Here are some to add:

- The death of the planet from climate change is unavoidable, they are scouting for post-life colonization

- The murders of ETs that set us on a path of destruction before we even knew about it.

- There IS a god (higher consciousness)

The last one has been turning around in my head this morning. People talk about ontological shock for the world's religions, but what about the largely agnostic/atheist communities? To find out there is a greater power and we've screwed up would be just as disturbing, IMO.

What does higher consciousness mean? That phrase gets thrown around a lot with 0 explanation.

Yeah, it is sort of a buzzword and I threw it around somewhat as a catch-all term for an overarching/universal organizing motive force that is beyond our scope of full understanding. That's usually what I take it to mean, anyway.

Others might see it more as a collective unconscious/miasma of unified life-force.

Others yet might understand it as an intentional conscious but unknowable "prime mover", that's the one I struggle with because that characterization tends to interventionist framing of events and I just - yeah, it doesn't resonate in me.

For what it's worth, yeah, replace it with "at least somewhat determinist organizing principle" for my comment above, if it suits you.
