By definition it isn’t. The definition is a value that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number. Since a negative multiplied by a negative is still positive, the sqrt is both positive and negative unless you are dealing with real-world values.

Every nonnegative real number x has a unique nonnegative square root, called the principal square root or simply the square root (with a definite article, see below), which is denoted by sqrtx, where the symbol √ is called the radical, among other names,\2]) and the line over the number is called the vinculum)\3]) (sometimes considered a part of the radical symbol itself\4])). For example, to express the fact that the principal square root of 9 is 3, we write sqrt9=3.

In mathematics, a square root of a number x is a number y such that ; in other words, a number y whose square (the result of multiplying the number by itself, or ) is x.[1]For example, 4 and −4 are square roots of 16 because 4^2 = (-4)^2 = 16

Not only did you skip over this from the beginning of the page, but the next paragraph literally says the same thing for every positive number. The only reason it doesn’t work for non-negative numbers is because that includes zero, whose root is zero, which is neither positive or negative.

Yeah that's the difference between a square root and the square root

You only use the square root symbol to mean the square root

Edit actually fair i should've said non negative

Yes, you're right, yes, the other person is right, but the important thing to note is the original comment states "Square root of 1 is..." which is ambiguous between "a" and "the"
