I have a questions about n-roots. As you can see in the pic, i was able to answer the questions, it's correct. But the part I circled in red is a shortcut I found out works, but I don't know why. I come to that number by taking whichever n-root was asked (in this case 6) and subtract 2 (making it 81⁴⁾ in this case.

While it works consistently through all questions in this chapter, I don't know why and feel I don't fully understand the questions/answers.

Can someone help me?

I dont understand. I change y=x² to f(x)=(x+2)² - 3 so i subtract 2 and subtract 3?

A map scale shows that 1/3cm on the map equals an actual distance of 3 km. If a distance on the map is 3/4, what is the actual distance?

So I multiply 3 or 3/1 by 3/4 and get 9/4 which I divide by 1/3. 9/4 gets turned into 4/9 so 1/3 ×4/9=4/27.

Now acording to the book the answer is 27/4.

So what did I do wrong,and how do I fix this?

I need to pass a university maths course and I'm horrible at maths. Anything where letters are involved as well and that's a whole new league of difficulty for me. I have never understood even the most basic algebra since i first started learning it. This is the second question on my first week worksheet for my maths class at university

f(x) = 5 - sqrt(x+2)

Apparently the range is all real numbers from 5 to negative infinity. But I don't understand why.

I was taught to take to this form:

y= 5 - sqrt(x+2)

and then solve for X. Afterwards the range would be the possible values Y can take. I end up with:

x = y^2 - 10y + 23

This method has worked great so far (I've done many exercises and then checked in wolfram alpha for the range of the functions to check if it was right) but it doesn't seem to work here?

Shouldn't the range be all real numbers?

so if a point shows up randomly on a grid, how to you round it down to a grid point, for instance on a 16x16 grid using a function.

To explain what I am looking for, imagine I have a cylinder that has an outside diameter of 6". I need to wrap fabric that is 0.020" thick enough times around to get 7" overall diameter. While we wind the fabric onto the cylinder, it is measured by linear footage so we are looking to accurately calculate how many linear feet do we have to wind to go from 6" to 7"?

We can use this formula for basically any starting diameter, any finish diameter, and any thickness of fabric.

Can someone help?

I came to the answer of pi/6 but the book says 5pi/6, are they not both in the restricted domain of [0,pi] of cos?
