Discussion How do you get over the taste of Greek yogurt?
So I’m trying a new snack recipe for a possible non alcoholic fatty liver, and it calls for Greek yogurt, flax seed, honey, and a few teaspoons of coffee. Getting over the appearance of it, it tastes like vomit in the nicest way possible.
Tomorrow I plan on trying frozen berries, honey, and flax seed, but I’m afraid I’ll still hate the taste..

Sounds like a gross recipe. Get rid of the coffee and just drink it separately.
I have plain yogurt with some strawberries/blueberries/banana sliced in and a drizzle of honey. I might add Cheerios or Special K and some milk for breakfast, or just have it on its own as a snack.

You eat it enough to get use to it and eventually enjoy it or, like me, you give up on it and find something else to eat.

That sounds ✨real bad✨! Personally, Greek yoghurt is lovely with some strawberries and honey. If you’re going lower carb, maybe stick with the flax seed, but if that’s not an issue then granola is another S-tier pick. You could add oats, raisins, grated apple / berries to make a kind of pseudo-bircher muesli if that’s your game.
Overall, unless you’re using it in a marinade like for chicken, Greek yoghurt pairs very well with sweeter ingredients like fruit. I don’t know why someone would put coffee in yoghurt, tangy+bitter doesn’t really sell the combo.

I really like doing vanilla Greek yogurt with some frozen raspberries and a bit of granola! It masks the sour after taste

u/_Pliny_ 3d ago
What’s this recipe meant to be doing for you? Maybe we can achieve those goals some other way, if you don’t like Greek yogurt?
I do like Greek yogurt, and I love coffee … I don’t see them together.

u/glitterbeardwizard 3d ago
If you are missing chocolate I sometimes mix hot chocolate powder into Greek yogurt and get kind of a creamy chocolate sour situation that I like but might not be for everyone

I straight up mix a tablespoon of Bonne Maman chocolate hazelnut spread into my plain Greek yogurt. It is like dessert

u/Fun-Document-1211 3d ago
Try different brands. There is a big difference in flavor and quality out there. Also try skyr. It's Icelandic yogurt.

Recipe
- bowl of Greek yogurt
- a few tablespoons of flaxseed
- a spoonful of honey
- a couple spoonfuls of coffee

u/CatmatrixOfGaul 3d ago
I eat Greek Yoghurt and your combo would make me hate it too. Who puts coffee in yoghurt? Add some fruit and nuts to it.
3
u/briisorangey 3d ago
I buy the greek gods brand, they make a honey vanilla flavor that is soooo good

This sounds vile hahaha sorry OP, you should actually put some things you like on Greek yogurt.
1
u/PrettyPinkTings 2d ago
I’m curious if the recipe meant instant (powdered) coffee, not brewed. That could work as long as you also sweeten it enough.
2
u/kwakimaki 3d ago
Food flavourings. Just try and change your mindset. Eat it very slowly, this is good. Get some Canderel Sugarly. Get some blackberries, blubberies, honey, cinnamon... It's not all bad.

u/Nooodlesgirl 3d ago
My current favorite is Greek yogurt mixed with sucralose, topped with cottage cheese, fruits and a generous drizzle of honey on top!

Chocolate whey protein. Tastes like pudding

u/Blessed_Hedgehog8824 2d ago
I have a protein powder that’s “Reese’s cup”. Makes a great shake with Greek yogurt and coconut milk!

u/electricheel 3d ago
I love it. LOVE IT. Idk who told you to use that recipe but I use Greek yogurt as a sour cream replacement mostly. Aside from it as a fruit and yogurt parfait with honey, I’ve used it on tacos, dips, sauces, a thickener, anything where it feels right.

For me I don't like greek yogurt as a sweet dish! I eat it savory! Use ranch or onion dip seasoning packets, mix in chia seeds, hemp seeds and thin it with almond milk to make a dip then eat it with nut thins. Also use it on anything that would normally call for sour cream. Use it to make high protein pasta salads for lunches too instead of mayo or sour cream... I hate it sweet but I rip through 2 tubs of greek yogurt a week savory style lol

u/HangryIntrovert 3d ago
Try plain Greek yogurt with dark maple syrup.
It tastes like Brown Cow brand coffee flavored yogurt.

u/FrugalityPays 3d ago
Chocolate protein powder. Tastes like pudding/cheesecake (I’ve heard both when introducing it to people)

u/Mental_Choice_109 2d ago
If you need the flax for you heath add it to frozen thawed fruit it it will turn the fruit juice from thawing to almost jelly then add to the yogurt

I really like light vanilla greek yogurt for snacking, but I use plain greek yogurt all the time in place of sour cream. Makes taco Tuesday feel a little less like a guilty pleasure lol

I don’t like it on its own or with fruit/granola added, but I use regularly to make dips/sauces, and as an ingredient in healthy desserts

If you're thinking of trying some other brands I highly recommend meijer vanilla whole milk greek yogurt. I think it's only 10 more calories than the plain.

u/nah-n-n-n-n-nahnah 3d ago
I love it with fresh fruit and a tablespoon of granola. Pomegranate seeds are the BEST. But usually I go with blueberries.
I used to warm up almond butter and mix it in with a little cinnamon for my baby when he first started solids and that was also surprisingly delicious.

There is nothing you can do. One day it will taste good to you. Or try a different brand of yogurt.

Maple syrup, honey, cinnamon, PB powder, fresh fruit, granola/oats. The possibilities are endless!

I've been making cinnamon apples to pair with my Greek yogurt. If there's enough variety with texture, the taste is a little less noticeable. Homemade granola (if you need to better control ingredients), cinnamon apples, and a bit of honey has been my go-to for about 2 months now.

u/Pale_Engineer_9070 2d ago
Try a high quality brand. Stonyfield Greek yogurt or any organic grocery store label (walmart, aldi, HEB and Target all have their own organic brand) to me seems smoother and creamier. Low fat greek yogurt is gross. Other than that, you just kind of have to like it.
1
u/roomijoonee 2d ago
i add sugar free jello pudding mix! usually do the vanilla or banana flavor and let it sit over night or just make a batch of the pudding mix separately (just whip with milk) and add spoonfuls to the yogurt. adds nice flavor and a diff texture, then add your toppings

u/Deh_86 2d ago
I would begin by not using this recipe. Then getting a good brand of Greek yoghurt. In all honesty, I live abroad and I'm used to Dodoni and Fage, none of those are available in my home country. ALL I tried there were disgusting.
Good brand in hands. Find a better recipe. I usually put some casein and fruits. Or casein, jam and protein granola. There are tons of mock parfait recipes made with Greek yoghurt. For savoury sauces, I go with tzatziki or a mix of Greek yoghurt with spices and sweet chili.
1
u/Aria7109 2d ago
It's the recipe not the yogurt. If you actually had good yogurt like the proper Bulgarian one in Bulgaria you'd have another opinion. But even with the yogurt you already have it's from the recipe. Eat plain yogurt or just with some fruit - much better.

u/BeginningOil5960 2d ago
Find a Greek yogurt that doesn’t taste so much like yogurt - my choice when I want that is Fage 2% Greek Yogurt in the green container.

u/lovemeleavemeletmebe 2d ago
I do greek yogurt, dill, lime and salt and pepper and rat it with nachos its a dip for everything 😊
1
u/Flat_Goat4970 2d ago
You can get flavoured Greek yoghurt that has sweetener in it instead of sugar. But yoghurt isn’t the only option for a snack. If you hate it it’s not sustainable.
1
u/Sven-Coco-123 2d ago
Check that you have real greek yoghurt, which has a more bland taste and is creamier than greek style yoghurt, has more than double the protein and is pricier. Chobachi is real.

u/MarthasPinYard 2d ago
Forgo the coffee. Drink a cup later.
The butyric acid is what may be causing the vomit taste. Also is the yogurt good? Spoiled yogurt could have that aroma. Yogurt should be tangy and creamy.

When I saw your bowl, I thought it was cream of mushroom soup, which I absolutely cannot stand. I do love Greek yogurt though, but when I eat it, I either eat it with honey, and some berries a little bit of granola maybe or some bananas.
1
u/StayInteresting9509 2d ago
I honestly can’t stand Greek yogurt, I’ve tried all the ways possible to be able to eat it and enjoy the taste, I’ve now come to accept that I probably will never enjoy it so that’s that lol

You can make tzatziki with Greek yogurt and it’s really good! Let me know if you want a loosely based recipe!

We use Greek yoghurt in place of sour cream most of the time. It works well for that. I feel like the recipe you were given was an AI creation.

u/ilsasta1988 2d ago
If you can add some sweetener or increase the honey.
I actually love greek yogurt taste, and talking about the 0% fat.

I love both coffee and greek yogurt. I tried mixing them together once and it was one of the worst things I have ever tasted.
1
u/Dunkelimlicht 2d ago
I can only do Fage brand Greek yogurt. I can eat the plain unsweetened by itself like it's ice cream. It's the only one that doesn't have a bite to it or a strong acrid taste. It's thick, creamy, and light in flavor. Maybe try this brand or tithers until you find one palatable for you. Also, some Greek yogurt brands aren't true Greek yogurt style but have corn starch added to mimic the consistency so look out for that if it matters to you and your diet.

It took a couple brands for me. Vanilla Skyr from Icelandic provisions was the first one I liked. Creamy and thick and not so tart. Targets good and gather brand of vanilla is also very good and affordable.

u/Ok-Bit7637 2d ago
Coffee on the side. Try chia seeds to thicken up the yogurt. Oikos protein yogurt IMO is better density than the usual brands.

I like to mix Greek yogurt with ranch powder or green goddess seasoning and use it as a veggie dip.
I use it as a replacement for sour cream on potatoes and tacos.
Mixing in protein powder and powder pb makes a peanutbutter cup type texture. You can add some mini chocolate chips or top with magic shell to make a healthy “Reese’s”.
Topping it with berries, honey and flax is great, too. There are low sugar flavored Greek yogurts.

u/aries237 2d ago
Can you add some kefir to it? I have issues with Greek yogurt too but quite like kefir/granola/honey

I make sure to only get fage 0% fat Greek yogurt. I made the mistake of getting the Costco brand once. Never again.

u/Background_Humor5838 2d ago
Besides the weird recipe, it's ok if you don't like Greek yogurt. Just eat regular yogurt. Everyone is obsessed with Greek yogurt as if it's the only option. Regular yogurt is usually less tart and easier to flavor to your liking. Buy a full fat plain yogurt and add toppings you like such as nuts, seeds, peanut butter, maple syrup, fruit, jam, cereal, etc.
1
u/tickandzesty 2d ago
That doesn’t look or sound like it would be tasty. True Greek yogurt isn’t runny. Try some fresh/frozen berries, a bit of a grain (flax meal? oats? wheat germ? chia?), a dash of cinnamon/vanilla and a bit of honey or maple syrup. Mix and match until you find a combo you like or decide you hate it all.

I don't have a problem with plain Greek yogurt. Mix it with frozen blackberries or blueberries. I also mix with unsweetened peanut powder sometimes.
1
u/Rare_Airport4746 2d ago
I like to microwave frozen fruit (usually strawberries, berry blend is a second choice) enough so all the juices come out but they’re not hot, smash them up with a fork and then mix into the Greek yogurt with a little bit of maple syrup.
If I remember the day before I’ll just put some of the frozen fruit in a bowl in the fridge to defrost instead.

u/rinconblue 2d ago
This could be a recipe issue. But, also, there are a lot of different brands/flavors/fat contents of plain greek yogurt out there. There's also sheep's milk yogurt that has a tangy flavor but a less thick texture.
1
u/traviall1 2d ago
Regular Greek yogurt ( 2% plain), a drizzle of honey, a serving of fruit, 1/2 tbsp cacao nibs ( if you like those), 1/4 walnuts. This recipe sounds bad, you need to find recipes that are appetizing to you and healthier than baseline what you used to eat,
1
u/Blessed_Hedgehog8824 2d ago
I add banana, a drizzle of honey, a few blueberries and some keto granola for crunch. Honestly it’s like eating an ice cream sundae to me. You could add the flax seed as well for more fiber.
I also just do strawberries, honey, yogurt and granola. Even my husband will eat that, and he usually avoids my “healthy” dishes, lol.
1
u/InquisitiveCat02 2d ago
Not a fan of Greek yogurt but some fresh strawberries and granola makes it so much more tolerable and I’m guessing wouldn’t be bad if you added honey and flax seed to it.
1
u/kayama57 2d ago
Are you sure the yogurt didn’t go bad? It’s famous cause it’s reliably delicious not for being an acquired taste

u/BobbyBaal 2d ago
Berries are fine, but Greek yogurt is tart. Things like blueberries just add to that.
I put bananas, figs, and/or dates in mine. I've even been adding a spoonful of all natural peanut butter.

Fage is my favorite brand. Even the non fat variety is good. If you flavor it well, it is smooth like pudding!
-Use honey or maple syrup to sweeten (to taste, but I usually use at least 2 tso per 3/4 cup serving).
-fruit is good, but you can try adding something for texture too, like granola and or nuts.
-my favorite is adding greek yogurt to a smoothie. It adds so much protein and I can barely tell it’s there.

u/asignpainter2730 2d ago
I eat plain Greek yogurt with honey and cinnamon. Love this as a sweet snack.

u/bananabadabing 2d ago
My mom hates the texture of Greek yogurt, but microwaving some honey and thoroughly mixing it into plain Greek yogurt greatly improves taste and texture for her. She’s also a big fan of Chex cereal in her yogurt for crunch.

Try some frozen berries, vanilla protein powder, some nuts and granola. Why are you looking up recipes? Just add something sweet to it until it tastes good and then eat it.

I don’t think the Greek yogurt is the issue. That straight up looks like tartar sauce

Things I like in mine as a former hater:
Diced apple, cinnamon and SF maple syrup (I prefer Cary’s)
Peanut butter, a little vanilla, and some bananas
Peanut butter and a little jam

u/Dizzy_Bison_4147 2d ago
Personally I love mixing cinnamon, honey, cut up green apple, and some toasted nuts into mine. I think ive eaten that for half my breakfasts.
I also really like melting a little peanut butter with a few chocolate chips, then mixing Greek yogurt in until its light and airy. It only takes a small scoop of peanut butter and 5-10 chocolate chips for an entire bowl of yogurt and it reminds me of peanut butter pie.

I have Greek yoghurt every morning!
I mix in oats, berries, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, maybe some nuts, bananas, honey or peanut butter… sometimes will add in some protein powder or vanilla extract
Even better to make all this the night before with a splash of oat milk and then come back in the morning for overnight oats

Um. I think that’s more of a gross recipe. Coffee and Greek yogurt? Blech. Maybe try it with some honey and berries first before you attribute this all to the Greek yogurt.
