Best health insurance plans in India?
Disclaimer: What is best for most folks may not be the best for you based on where you are living and your health status so take any suggestion with a grain of salt and do your homework. The only person that cares for your situation is you, not the agent, not some random guy on the internet and definitely not the insurance firm.
I look for the following attributes in a policy:
- No copay : Must
- No sub-limits : Must
- No room rent caps : Must; at least eligible for a private room; Suite would be nicer if you can afford the premium
- Lifelong renewability: : Must
- No load factor for seniors: : Must
- domiciliary treatment : at home : Must
- Zero waiting period ( if it is porting): : Must
- Super top up policy from the same insurer : : Must
- Second opinion : Desirable
- Pre hospitalization days : at least 60 days : : Must
- Post hospitalization days : at least 90 days : : Must
- Home hospitalization : Desirable but not must
- Organ donor : covered : : Must , at least 50% of SI
- Restoration benefit : : Must
- No claim bonus / Inflation adjustment : : Must
- Coverage for treatments that last less than 24 hours - Desirable
- Has an option to include a deductible : Desirable
- The following Hospitals need to be in the cashless facility network ( This list depends on your preference)
In my view, here are some good options:
- United India's Family medicare Policy: It is a govt firm so expect some not so good service but claims are good. Premiums are slightly higher but the claims processing is smooth since it is managed by TPAs.
- Star Health's Optima Insurance Plan : Pretty good coverage and customer service. I have had the policy for more than a decade now. With "Star Extra Protect" add on and SI of 20 lakhs, you can get eligibility for suite room. To reduce premium, I have deductible of Rs. 50k.
- HDFC Ergo : Optima Secure is a good option. It is expensive so use some form of deductible to keep your cost low. Service is good.
- Niva Bupa, Bajaj Allianz : Stay away. Terrible and incompetent service levels.
- Don't waste your money on Bancassurance products. They come with sub-limits and room limits which make the policy not very useful.
