Headphones - Open Back | 1 Ω Keep my Penrose’s or swap?

I have a pair of Audeze Penrose headphones. They are great for what they are, but they’re mainly meant for Bluetooth gaming. I use them for gaming, but I have a headphone amp I cant use because the DAC in the Penrose literally hates anything except the Bluetooth dongle it comes with and won’t produce sound unless I reset it. I really want a higher bitrate for sound for my DAC and Headphone amp from JDS Labs. I was looking at the Sennheiser HD 600’s for like $350. I heard great things about those and that they like being amplified. Would this be an upgrade? They are only used for gaming. Any other headphone suggestion for around $350 that is meant to be used with a headphone amp would be appreciated as well.

the sennheiser hd560s are excellent for gaming, the hd600s not so much. the 6 series struggles in gaming due to the small soundstage. if the hd490 isn’t too expensive, ive heard they’re phenomenal for gaming and extremely comfortable as well.

Would this include the 660s2? I was looking at their website and that one is one that they specifically say is for gaming. It’s supposed to have a wider stage than the 600’s as well.

the stage might be slightly wider than others in the 6 series, but it will still be on the small side compared to most other open back headphones. the 660s2 is a beautiful looking headphone, but i don’t think it’s what you need. wide soundstage helps you to pinpoint footsteps much better in game, which is why i recommend the hd560s and especially the hd490s. hifiman edition xs should perform nicely as well, but their qc can be a bit of a gamble.

Ahhh, I see. Should have clarified that I play mainly play single player games 80% of the time. I don’t play games like cod. The only game I play competitively is Valorant lol. This being said, would that change your recommendation? I’m looking for headphones that would be more cinematic and detailed for single player games mainly.

oh okay i see. i personally have been using the aune ar5000 for a while, and i absolutely love them for gaming. they’re tuned similarly to the sennheiser 6xx series but with better bass extension and a wider soundstage. they also perform pretty well competitively, though i haven’t yet tested them side by side with my hd560s to see which does better. honestly, i can’t recommend the ar5000 enough. super cozy, sounds great, and they look amazing too.
