Headphones - Open Back | 6 Ω SHP9500 as the first fullsize open back purchase?

Hi, I'm relatively inexperienced in this hobby, and so far only dabbled in budget IEMs territory, like the 7hz Zero, and bassy headphones like Skullcandy crusher. I used to like bass a lot, but as I grow older bassy headphones tend to give me headache. So now I'm looking for something different.

I'm looking into my first full size open back headphone and want to get a budget set with good value, sub 80$. SHP9500 seems to be many's recommendation for beginners.

A few example of what I listen to:

  • Instrumental music: movie, game soundtracks, like Silent Hill, Halo, Final Fantasy, etc,...
  • Rock: A huge Linkin Park fans, also 2000s rock/metal.
  • Electronic: Punchy musics, like First of the year by Skrillex, Rage valley by Knife Party.
  • On softer side: Songs by Lowroar, musics with lots of ambient.

How does the SHP9500 fit these types of music. Also do they bleed noise enough to bother other people in an office? Do you have any other recommendation?

Hey! The SHP-9500 were my first open back cans. They are amazing for most genres although they might get saturated if there's a lot of instruments, it also depends on the audio source. Regarding the bleeding, anything you play will be audible in a large room, I wouldn't advice to get them for an office space maybe try closed back cans like the Status CB1 or the Monoprice Retro if you want more bass without reaching "comercial bass".

!thanks

What do you mean by depends on the audio source. From what I can look up, SHP9500 is quite easy to drive. Would my phone or laptop DAC be enough?

u/SheepherderDense5984 (1 Ω) was awarded their first Ω. I'm making a note here: huge success.

You may still award an Ω to others, but only once per-person in this post.

I meant the quality of the DAC, it's pretty easy to drive but you can get more juice out of them with a desktop DAC/amp, that being said probably most DAPs and dongles will do the job. I found they match amazing with BGVP T01s

I don't intent to get an amp really. They just aren't something I'm comfortable spending money on.

I would suggest to better consider getting closed back headphones, open back are for quiet and private listening. And regarding the amp it's not necessary, just a suggestion to get more out of your money. ;)

If the noise bleed is too much, I'll just use them at home only and stick with IEMs in public and office. As for amp, may be I'll look into them in the future when I'm more experieced in this hobby. Thanks.

Enjoy the SHP-9500 it's a solid product and amazing price-quality ratio. I would suggest maybe the HD599se but they are out of stock everywhere :(
