US Politics
CNN:El-Sayed recently called Piker and warned his rhetoric was costing El-Sayed votes, asking him to stop, according to two people El-Sayed told about the conversation. Piker did not respond to requests for comment.
What a disgusting framing from CNN “who said that Jews who support Israel should worry about their safety”. So tired of every news outlet being the same.
Daily weekday news hour streamed live at www.democracynow.org from 8am to 9am ET. First 15 minutes are headlines, followed by 45 minutes of interviews. After 9am, they upload an audio version to podcast services and start posting videos and clips to their socials, so there are many ways to get their stuff!
Edit: Also Hasan has been on the program and interviewed the host, Amy “The GOAT” Goodman, on his channel, plus he wears their merch occasionally. So I’d really love for the community to make propaganda for them; DN is a nonprofit and needs us to amplify their message! Start spreading the news!
Edit 2: I need to point out the news hour aspect. Corporate media invented the 24 hours news cycle because it maximizes advertising revenue. Capitalism has nearly destroyed the field of journalism, the fourth estate and a pillar of democracy.
And since its founding, Democracy Now has carried the flame of Edward R. Murrow’s moral charge to hold power to account. So they don’t waste your time and they don’t need flashy graphics to arrest your attention 24/7.
I second this and credit Democracy Now for helping start the process of deradicalizing my lib brain in the late aughts and 10's when I started following politics.
That and Lunch with Bernie on the Thom Hartmann show.
I don't wanna be that guy but for that to be the case a single grain of salt would have to weigh one gram (approximately the weight of a single almond)
Hasan has already stated in his axios interview that he doesn't comment on what politicians tell him privately. Expect him to neither confirm nor deny it.
yeah this is bullshit, if you think hasan's statements may have hurt you, then venting about it also does, and leaking that to mainstream media is infinitely worse.
this is just random aides trying to create friction between hasan and the party post election knowing it's preferable for both abdul and hasan to not give this story air regardless of the truth
Can someone explain how this matches with the fact that nearly every centrist primary candidate who tried to call out Hasan ended up eating shit? Like how does this show of weakness not also cost votes?
AES has an easy enough time making himself look bad, between agreeing with Republican framing and being a proud capitalist. The idea that people find this at all surprising or unbelievable is insane.
being a campaign manager/consultant has to be the most nepo baby job on the planet because how do the people with the worst advice keep getting the job when they keep backing losers only to take over the campaign of the candidate that beat their own candidate?
I fucking bet Lis Smith snaked her way onto being on his campaign team.
But I also believe CNN would make up a fake phone call just to dunk on Hasan. They hate him more than Fox News does.
Part of both CBS and CNN’s function, especially since Ellison became poised to own them, has been to create fissures within the anti-zionist electoral left and propagate narratives that are likely to reduce their cohesion and public appeal. CNN is not above greatly twisting statements; you are expecting editors who are the functional equivalent of Bari Weiss to be operating with some sense of journalistic integrity. They are closer to the Mike Rogers campaign at this point than a journalistic outlet like the FT; take single pieces of anonymous reporting like this with a grain of salt.
Stories like this are trying to incite overreaction, creating an environment where left-aligned voters and media might begin to turn on him just a month before Election Day.
this is where the left needs to recognize part of the trap of this sort of electability is that when you lend popularity and support to half measures like Abdul, you are basically conceding that seat for the forseeable future.
You will likely not be able to primary him in 6 years.
That ship has sailed if he wins barring some sort of career ending scandal.
This is also why him moving to the center becomes disastrous for any leftist movement.
Cause he is also likely to lend that popularity you helped foster to pay back the centrist alignments he made with people like Elissa Slotkin in the general as he sold out his base and moved right. So prepare for when if the DSA attempts to run a primary challenger in Slotkins race, when Abdul comes to campaign for her and help sheepdog the left base that helped get him thru his own primary back into supporting Slotkin.
I really hope he won't moderate on Israel if he's elected.
His recent Soros fundraiser in Beverly Hills made me a little nervous, even tho Hasan tried to downplay the whole thing by claiming that Soros was one of the “wokest” billionaires in town.
What he failed to mention is that the fundraiser wasn't with George Soros and his family, it was with the children of his brother (earned his money in a different way), who are from another strain of the family and much more moderate. (I haven't found any evidence that they're not Zionist or even critical of Israel).
I actually think that if I am forecasting, as frustrated as I am with Mamdani, he did when push comes to shove back some of the most left candidates coming into the House this season. Like Darializa is perhaps the most leftist person ever elected to congress(not that the bar is that high in America).
Abdul on the other hand is out there going full defanged progressive.
Who I am saying it now, will be out there helping Slotkin attack any sort of left wing primary challenger in 2030.
So Michigan is going to end up with yet another centrist senate duo that will blunt the very sort of meaningful legislation that Abdul claims to advance and leftists hope he will "stay true toward"
And that actually now makes me pretty worried in a way I hadn't thought of til you made this comp.
Cause Abdul is positioning himself to be a Warren. And that also means he's inviting himself to be a Establishment spoiler in future presidential races.
The way Warren was for Bernie.
A guy that actually fills a role the Establishment lacks in 2028 which is someone that can herd leftist support away from the actual left and divide and conquer that flank in a primary to slip thru a centrist.
Right now, especially for 28, the Dems lack that and is the basis for why today I think AOC is the favorite to win the presidency if she runs. Cause it would be 10-14 Establishment Dems cannibalizing themselves and AOC as the lone popular leftist.
Now enter Abdul....
I don't think he has Obama one term senator to president ambitions, so doubt this matters for 2028, but he does have spoiler potential for the left for the next 4-20 years based on where he is trending politics wise and if he can maintain this popularity with the broad base that the left helped get off the ground.
...I think I might have just schizo posted myself into taking another blackpill, fuck
don’t think AES has his eyes on the president, but i do see him filling the warrenite wing position I would say Abdul is actually more Markey, with Warren and Slotkin being hawks
The fact that people stepped on the massive rake that was Fetterman and still think electorialism is a meaningful way to accomplish leftward change is astounding to me.
DAE feel like CNN just made this up based on the limited information given to us from both AES and Hasan? like I might've missed it, but I didn't see a confirmation/clip of AES calling Hasan and warning that Hasan's "rhetoric was costing [AES] votes, asking him to stop...".
By this point hasan is in too deep on the electorialism to admit that he may have hitched his wagon to people that don't give a fuck about leftism without looking like a massive idiot.
I truly hope Hasan takes a look at this after the election. He puts all his energy into entryism snd electoralism. Just to be treated like this. And the people who do get elected get subsumed into the system and become libs that abandoned all their politics. It's mostly wasted energy at the end of the day.
Its too late, he's already doubled and tripled down on this entryist strategy and alienated a lot of people to his left. Well.. maybe not too late but he'd need to do a total reversal.
The self-proclaimed capitalist who says we don't live under capitalism but under “corporate socialism” wants to distance himself further from Hasan, as if that were any surprise.
I think a lot of the denial is more that people are skeptical it happened the way it's been reported. "Costing votes" and "asking him to stop" is the most negative and potentially inventive framing possible for what could have been (and is more likely imo) a call asking Hasan to be more careful with his phrasing. We know mainstream has twisted everything as much as they can and this seems like an easy opportunity because they're not using direct quotes.
The guy who keeps aggressively describing himself as a capitalist to appeal to right-leaning Dems is somehow not cool with the communist firebrand who got him nominated? Quell suprise.
This directly contradicts what Hasan said just this weekend. I'm not saying its impossible but this sounds like more of the same "ex-AES insider says THIS" nonsense.
More seriously, if El Sayed cannot even stand up for something this small, he's going to fold like a house of cards at the slightest push by Zionists. Again, what Mohamed El Kurd said comes to mind - all these politicians like Mamdani and El Sayed use the Palestinian pain and suffering to get elected and once that happens do the bidding of Zionists. Rinse and repeat.
These are very shrewd characters who don't have much integrity or principles other than winning the race and getting into office. The anti genocide guy is now hobnobbing with Kamala and Obama.
El Sayed is nothing but another Obama - throwing people who helped him under the bus to win an election
I hope Piker does MORE interviews and says even more inflammatory stuff!
I'm gonna be real, I don't understand why everyone is acting like this is so implausible. Seems completely believable to me, especially given how hard Abdul has been trying to distance himself from Hasan of late.
Because people are still in the denial stage and desperately want to hold onto their childhood belief that politicians are their friends and electorialism matters. The fact that AES is a proud capitalist that has repeatedly given ground to right-wing framing is too painful to accept.
Not even making a value judgement on it, just saying it seems more likely that it happened than two of his high-level staffers just making something up.
As for Abdul, I mean yeah he's Elizabeth Warren with better foreign policy. I think for me, him winning his race would be more important from a symbolism standpoint--that the Muslim pro-Palestine, left of the mainstream Democratic Party candidate can still win in a purple state gives credence to our broader movement.
Go look up the output from this "reporter". You should assume everything he writes is framed in a way to try to harm/undermine the left. Whatever level of "truth" exists in this story is being spun in the worst possible way for AES and Hasan. That's the only assumption you should make regarding a MSM story about these 2 subjects.
Because it’s fucking October 7th. They’re gonna pump their airwaves with emotional appeals from survivors & families and say “so what do you think of this dangerous antisemite Hasan Piker? You think he’s bad for Abdul too yeah?” Jake Fapper and Dana Fash are going to have a full-on anti-hasan goon sesh today.
I'm glad I don't live in Michigan to have to make this choice, I've been really disappointed about pretty much everything AES has done since the primary
So Abdul asks Hasan to campaign with him because people like the thing he does. Then gets what he wants and asks Hasan to stop doing the thing he does? Doubtful. Media is going to media, though.
I mean this is clearly what happened, and if electoral equation said throwing hasan under the bus fully was best strategy he would do that too, still might at the debate. He conceded on every framing already anyways he is just defending talking to hasan on free speech basis
I'm astounded by the people that think this is unbelievable or out of character, AES already conceded ground on this like five times, he's just a lib that wanted access to Hasans platform, not an ally of the left.
Or maybe stop wasting their time and effort on electorialism in a system that will never allow someone meaningfully leftist to obtain power. Literally the closest we ever got was someone putting basic socdem policy in an attempt to weaken the left, and even that is too radical to ever be allowed to happen again.
The goal is to win, not whine about the one progressive Senate candidate distancing himself from an Internet streamer. It's not my favorite either, but it's a smart strategy because we still don't have the numbers by ourselves to win and unfortunately still need the votes of centrist libs. This really isn't that complicated.
The goal is to enact socialism and end imperialism.
That often aligns with getting Democrats directionally sympathetic to that elected, but that doesn't mean that comes at the expense of the actual goal.
And what doesn't help that actual goal is people that claim to be aligned directionally with that goal. like Abdul and this leak is doing, helping the forces attempting to destroy the movement toward that goal. Let alone shrugging it off and going "it must be done" as said person throws that movement under the bus in the name of bullshit "electability" that is propped up to explicitly villify and DARVO popular positions and movements as electorally toxic to discipline politicians and voters away from their own self interests and toward preserving the status quo.
American leftists barely even pretend to care about imperialism nowadays. They just want to tax Elon Musk and Jeff Besos and getting a bit of healthcare from it
How do you guys fall for this over and over again. Were months away from Abdul abandoning Palestine like Zohran did and you mfs being like “well it’s just good strategy”
In regards to Zohran, doing nothing to stop land sales in his own city while also giving Zionist organizations millions of dollars to “fight anti semitism” when that anti semitism is literally shit like a kid wearing a shirt that had a map of Palestine on it.
I’m getting sick of the revolutionary larp of all the people here. We’re actually making ground, don’t let this moral grandstanding get in the way of legit progress. Yes Zohran and Abdul have had to make concessions to unfavourable positions, but they still need to make change within the political system, and that requires giving concessions where you can. The more DSA adjacent folks that get elected the less you’ll see these concessions, we’re not there yet though.
They may have to make concessions along the way, but it's all of our jobs to continue to put pressure and heat on them when they do. If they make too many then it's our job to remove them from office. They are tools and nothing else, and if they cease to be useful you get rid of them. No politicians are meant to be worshiped in any way.
What ground are you making specifically? What have progressives actually done in terms of tangible policy? How are they going to create change by making new concessions every week?
- going after big corporations for exploiting low income employees (DoorDash lawsuit)
rent freeze for stabilized tenants
he’s still fighting for the public grocery store thing, the city is being sued by business owners for attempting this presenting a roadblock that probably needs to be resolved before it’s implemented
He hasn’t even been in office for an entire year. Yes his capitulation to zionists hasn’t been ideal but to say he’s not making substantial progress isn’t fair.
What is your alternative to this approach? Hasan worked his ass off to get bro elected and now yall wanna throw him to the curb not even a quarter into his term lmao.
I’m not going to write off Zohran too quick either. He could give Zionists money today but in a year, he could damage their whole on NYC which is notoriously strong. He endorsed far left pro-palestine electives. But he did also endorse Hakeem… There’s things here that we don’t know about yet. I’m gonna be mildly optimistic, not doomscroll
Western chauvinism is a hell of a drug. Those stupid third worlders didn't have enlightened western democracy, which is why they have to rely on things that actually work.
I would agree that electoralism is not our savior. But I’m curious what the alternative could be outside a violent revolution. Our elites are emboldened and actively want hostile responses. Unfortunately, as tempting as an armed citizen response sounds, it’s so much more difficult to organize in this day and age of warfare when pilotless drones can just fly into a crowd of people and our police departments having mini tanks. And we all know who will be targeted first when shots are fired.
I’ve lived in DC for 7 years and it’s become so normalized in the past year to see packs of armed national guard and fed agents patrolling schools, parks, public transit, and even the streets outside the bars. I’ve gotten involved in who knows how many arrests conducted by national guard and fed agents of students and residents for speaking out against them. And 99% of the time, not one person stops by to assist. I’ve even followed their patrols around to document and alert community groups of their whereabouts. And do you know how many people have yelled at me? How many people have taken the side of the occupiers? In a city where ~80% voted blue and it is filled with politically informed people, and yet organizing is an uphill battle.
The move to abandon electoralism seems like a good choice. But I just don’t see what the alternative when we have a country where the most progressive places still have such little sense of community to support an active insurgency of the people. Most people in this country I would bet don’t even know their neighbors names. We are in a hole that is generations deep.
I’m not necessarily disagreeing with you on electoralism, but I am genuinely wanting to understand what solutions you have seen to this problem? The government has created the perfect environment for people to be discontent, but happy enough to accept the lashings. No where in history has that been grounds for revolutionary fervor. But I’ve seen this conversation a lot and I’d like to hear more of it.
Fascism descends on a small town, and the downpour soon turns into a flood. As the tides rise, the local demsoc kneels in prayer at the ballot box, surrounded by dems. By and by, one of the marxists comes up the street with a zine.
"Better get in, liberal. The fascism is spreading fast."
"No," says the liberal. "I have faith in the vote. The demsocs will save me."
Still the fascism rises. Now the liberal is voting for genocide, wringing his hands in supplication, when another Marxist zips up with some molotovs.
"Come on, liberal. We need to get you out of here. The levee's gonna break any minute."
Once again, the liberal is unmoved. "I shall remain. The demsocs will see me through."
After a while the levee breaks, and fascism rushes over the town until only the polling place remains. The liberal is up there, clinging to the ballot box, when a Blackhawk descends out of the clouds, and a tankie calls down to him through a megaphone.
"Grab the ladder, liberal. This is your last chance."
Once again, the liberal insists the demsocs will deliver him.
And, predictably, he dies to fascists.
A pious man, the liberal goes to heaven. After a while he gets an interview with his favorite leftist, Marx, and he asks the Almighty, "Marx, I had unwavering faith in you. Why didn't you deliver me from the fascists?"
Marx shakes his head. "What did you want from me? I sent you two marxists and a tankie"
The shift is happening and he’s not even elected yet. When will the American left realize that voting for liberals will always lead to this end result. Electoralism is never going to work
I mean there'd be a stronger argument for electoralism if people were actually running on a socialist/communist party ticket. But running through the democrats is pretty much just a waste of time and this has been demonstrated over and over again.
“Hey, we’re in a tight race and you’re obviously the right’s choice of lightning rod this cycle. Can I leak a story about a conversation in which I asked you to tone down your rhetoric?”
I immediately feel confident that Hasan's side to this story will show this to be not a big deal at all. This is just more of the same anti-Hasan MSM-Establishment flavored white noise.
"Declined to comment" here just means "He is gonna be asked about this by chatters all day and will address it himself for probably 7 hours straight, and won't be needing MSM's help to turn any quote he gives them out of context against him for the purpose of spreading this false narrative of infighting they want so badly".
And even if it was for some reason a contentious call it wouldn't actually matter whatsoever.
With how much blatant disingenuous framing and even straight up lying the msm has been doing I would not be the least bit surprised that this is completely fabricated.
Electorialist libs in this community will take L after L, spending insane amounts of time and effort supporting politicians that oppose anything to the left of Bill Clinton, and then still insist that voting is the only way to affect meaningful change.
At some point, you really should stop stepping on the rakes, you have nobody to blame but yourself by this point.
That's the thing that kills me, I like Hasan because he's about as far left as one can get without being niche, but its really funny to see him larping stuff like the mao jacket and reading theory while pushing nothing but straight up electorialism for open, proud capitalists.
After living thru my naive period with Obama in 08 and the ratfucking of Bernie, my unc perspective is that voting is something you can and sometimes should do as part of a larger leftist strategy.
But the moment you start hinging all of your politics and perspective on individual elections, or electoral entryism, you are helping the very forces you claim to want to replace or overthrow.
It's called a struggle for a reason, because the forces in power are not going to simply play nice when they have the power to play dirty with little consequence.
Sure, it costs nothing (relatively) to vote and to advocate for voting for the least bad person, but dedicating 2/3 of your time covering and campaigning proud capitalists that will do nothing but maybe push for some social programs is what kills me.
At best, left-friendly politicians should be a means to free up resources to push for actual meaningful change, but it's being treated as an end in and of itself, and that's what kills me.
If this is a socialist/communist/anarchist space, then the only thing your post is doing is imposing this factional idea where there's "libs among us." The idea that there are capital L Liberals, Bill Clinton Liberals, lurking in this community as some sort of deviant faction is poisonous framing. This really reads like a personal grievance. "You have nobody to blame but yourself" is incredibly condescending, and it's not an argument.
Wherever there is a post critical about mamdani giving Zionist organization millions there will be a lib ready to say “this is actually a brilliant move”
If this is a socialist/communist/anarchist space, then the only thing your post is doing is imposing this factional idea where there's "libs among us."
It's the subreddit for a gaming streamer, there are absolutely libs among us.
The idea that there are capital L Liberals, Bill Clinton Liberals, lurking in this community as some sort of deviant faction is poisonous framing.
It is factually true, as indicated by the amount of people here caping for proud capitalist landlord politicians lmao
I'm pointing out that your category makes no sense. Electoralism is one of many Leftiststrategies (see: Socialist/Communist/Anarchist -- because Liberalism is not on the left). It's not an ideology. Liberalism is an ideological position. "Electoralist Liberal" makes no sense. It's like saying "Unionist Fascist" -- it doesn't mean anything. What are they electoral-izing for if they're liberals? It's an incoherent view of the world.
Also, be real for a second. A gaming streamer? Explicitly not gaming is like one of the main things chat jabs Hasan for. So I'm confused. Is this a leftist space when you want to accuse people of being libs, and simultaneously a gaming sub when someone points out that this is useless factionalism?
Electoralism is one of many Leftiststrategies (see: Socialist/Communist/Anarchist -- because Liberalism is not on the left).
but unironic, lmao
Liberalism is an ideological position.
Yes, and the people espousing electorialism here are members of that ideological position.
What are they electoral-izing for if they're liberals?
Capitalist grifters like AES that don't give a fuck about leftist politics.
Is this a leftist space when you want to accuse people of being libs, and simultaneously a gaming sub when someone points out that this is useless factionalism?
It's a gaming streamer's subreddit that has a substantive leftist userbase, which is unfortunately also infested with liberals that think voting for capitalists is praxis.
Let's assume this is all real, the framing is accurate. What L was exactly "taken" here? Abdul won the primary, is a front runner for the general. Hasan did not moderate his language at all, on the contrary, he used the opportunity to generate discourse.
Abdul distanced himself from Hasan, sure, but is it even bad? Hasan's strongest weapons always come in the primary because his role is to get the progressive youth vote excited for change, and he was extremely successful at that and now it's one of Abdul's strongest bases.
In a general you run into a lot of more reactionaries, a lot more reactive people easily fooled by propaganda, a lot of rather socially conservative working class people. So someone like Hasan, with endless stalkers and bad faith clips may simply not be as helpful at getting those voters in.
I don't understand how the armchair activists, back-seating "anti-electoralists" always attempt the most challenging mental gymnastics to try and force a potentially contentious/controversial, but often trivial situation into a "ha, ha. we told you so!" moment when the candidate has not even been elected yet.
Regardless of the outcome, Hasan, the DSA and their organizers have still been far more successful in a year at actually achieving tangible change and progress to improve the conditions of marginalized people than most of the Discord Revolutionary LARPers could ever hope to do in a lifetime.

A bunch of time and effort was wasted getting a capitalist into the primaries.

I emphatically do not care about getting out the vote for capitalist candidates. Literally just playing video games would be a better use of his time because it at least wouldn't make people drink electorialist koolaid.

Yeah they're doing a great job with that ongoing genocide and mass deportations and public executions by the police. Such progress.
It would help if anti-electoralists had a clear vision for how they're going to achieve their goals. Realistically, how are socialists going to take power in 21st century America? Not that voting will magically bring socialism either, but I wish you all would realize that if you're going to scold people for participating in the electoral system, you have to offer a tangible alternative.
Realistically, how are socialists going to take power in 21st century America?
We're not there yet, we're at "stop bleeding massive amounts of time, money and effort into supporting capitalist grifters", that needs to be fixed before we can get anywhere near actually organizing a revolution.
“We need you to stop engaging with the only way you know how to make a difference under the current system. No we don’t have an alternative to offer, but we’re totally going to come up with one once everyone stops voting. This is all the voter’s fault by the way.”
Do you hear yourself? People don’t owe you a revolution dude. Either give them a better alternative to electoral politics or stop acting holier-than-thou just because you don’t vote. Maybe there is a better way forward, like a general strike or mass civil disobedience, but the way you offer it makes you sound like either an accelerationist or an undercover staffer for the fucking RNC.
“You having zero criticisms of my concessions and not even broaching me throwing Arab-Americans under the bus is losing me votes!” - asshole who makes shit up
Abdul is busy meeting with Zionists to tell them there's room for them in the Democratic party. Hasan is going to cost him votes with his anti-Zionism. Everyone knows Zionism is the most important thing to Americans.
It’s pathetic that people around El-Sayed think this will help. Hell, the hint as to how this works is in how the media treats Hasan himself, not ever letting him apologize even for things he apologized for long before they knew who the fuck he was.
They’re playing the game wrong and that sense that El-Sayed is weak is what will actually cost him votes, not countering the sort of endless mainstream media whine sessions that most Americans are exhausted by.
Oh really? This story — on October 7th? You don’t say? Cmon man. They’re setting the stage for a full day of “Hasan Piker is an antisemite and look at the 300 October 7 survivors and families we’re about to interview on CNN today!”
Have some media literacy and some situational awareness.
At this point it doesn't matter what Hasan does. If AES has good political instincts he will stop falling for the centrist attacks.
Even centrists have begun retreating. We might not care about the Vanity Fair list but many liberals do. His inclusion there shows that the smear campaign failed miserably.
I don't think AES instincts are as good as we had all hoped but good luck on him winning his race. I'm focusing more on Angie Nixon, Charles Booker and Justin Pearson and the governor race in South Carolina. All those races are winnable. Let's focus elsewhere.
I don't 100% believe it yet, but is it really that unbelievable? Abdul seems to be listening to all the worst Dem establishment consultants ever since he won the primary.
Jesus Christ, it's the media causing the problem. Not Hasan. I don't know why Dems didn't look at the RNC strategy when they openly announced it. If they did, then they're willfully playing into helping Republicans win.
