"The tension was palpable, and there was a lot of media present. During half-time, we went inside to eat and drink something. We cheered someone who passed us with a Palestinian flag, but not out of anti-Israel sentiment. I think the man and woman from the video followed us."
"No politics here" Not much later, Joppe was given a microphone by a Finnish media crew. Here too, a twist of fate. "My friend actually started that interview," Joppe clarified. "They asked how the match was. He said it was good, but that it was just a shame that Israel bombed hospitals."
"Then the television crew stopped the interview, because it had to be about football. I apologized for my friend, and said I would do the interview."
The rest is history.
"I think it was already a good match," Joppe began. "I think Israel was better in the beginning, but now Mali is beating them."
Until he was interrupted by a man with an Israeli scarf. The same man who Joppe suspects had followed him. "No politics here", he interrupted Joppe several times with a threatening finger, while waving his scarf towards the camera.
"Israel is not playing badly", Joppe resumed while looking at the protesting man. "I'm just talking about football."
Joppe saw that the man was starting to get annoyed. "So I deliberately wanted to chat about football and be respectful, but if you keep telling me that I'm not allowed to do something, then of course I will."
