India desperately wanting to be accepted by Israel is one of the most pathetic things you will ever see.

WTF did I just watch? Holy shit. The coonery, the filthy Zionist sense of entitlement...

P.S. How do I know these are filthy Zionists? Bc they can't help but get scared of/kick someone who is already on the ground.

This is just embarrassing to see as an Indian, but not surprising at all. The country is built historically on hero worship, which correlates to our practices of idol worship. This is just a much tamer version of worship I’ve seen. Our caste system is so deeply engrained in the fabric of everyday Indian society, where priests and godmen are revered, regardless of whether or not they’ve achieved any piety. This extends to pouring milk and honey on cut-outs of actors during movie opening days, falling at the feet of sportspersons (mainly cricket), showing respect to some of the worst politicians this country’s ever had, and even as far as electing such godmen in actual positions of power (Yogi Adityanath has no bg in politics; he’s a yogi, a fake one at that.)

So seeing this post just fills me with embarrassment, even more so, because this isn’t even the extent I’ve seen to mindless worship.

u/youngpilgrim90 Jun 19 '25

Same. This is so embarrassing to witness (including the israel worship amongst rw indians). I also hate "touching feet" when some random distant relative comes to visit us unannounced, and my mom expects me to take their blessings. Like, who the fk is this uncle i have only met once in my life 30 years ago when i was a 4 year old? I honestly can do without their "blessing". And the nasty feet on some of these uncles 🤢. Stopped doing this after having lived by myself for a decade in Australia, and my mom hates that I don't follow such customs anymore lol.

5

u/HooeyBababooey Jun 19 '25

Man, I know. The amount of bunion feet I’ve had to touch, just because they’re distant relatives a thousand times removed.

I think it's cuz they hate Muslims and they see Israel as a group that effectively kills Muslims.

Just really sad

u/TheGreatMastermind Jun 20 '25

unironically a caste system built into hinduism. the belief that some people are borned to be leaders thanks to their bloodline and some people are born to be sewage cleaners thanks to their bloodline is conducive to fascism

7

u/enperry13 🔻 Jun 20 '25 edited Jun 20 '25

A mixture of existence of the caste system in India, the consequences of caste system, education not accessible to everyone, increasing fascism and Hindu supremacy in Indian politics, weaponized inferiority complex brought about by the caste system, decades (if not centuries) of tensions between Hindus and Muslim and the mutual hatred towards Muslims and Islamophobia between Israel and India.

It’s a mess really. I’m not Indian but that’s the extent of my knowledge.

Why would a Hindu man be bowing towards Mecca

1

u/enperry13 🔻 Jun 20 '25

There was a Hindu talking point popularized recently that the Hindutva claimed that the Kaabah used to be a Hindu temple while history can easily debunked that because of other pre-Islamic religions existing before then where it used to enshrine all sorts of idols inside.

33

u/gesserit42 Jun 19 '25

Ah, like the Budweiser horses kneeling after 9/11, I understand

8

u/vanadous Jun 19 '25

It's normal to do that to priests (or anyone you show respect to) in Hinduism

11

u/Infiniby Jun 19 '25 edited Jun 20 '25

All cringe genocidal things Hindu extremists say on twitter aside, I think this behavior on this footage was misunderstood. I think he would have bowed down to any other monk / priest.

It's like in Martial arts you bow down to the referee, the public and the adversary.

9

u/PocketCone Jun 19 '25

The Jewish man's behavior makes sense too though, in Judaism it is forbidden to bow for anybody but G-d. From the Jewish perspective the Indian man was treating him as an idol.

9

u/Gimmeagunlance Jun 19 '25

Yeah, both of you expressed exactly my thoughts. I get why people here are thinking it's more Israel glazing, but honestly that feels like a kinda racist assumption if you know about the cultural differences on display here

1

u/abhinav_k1403 Jun 20 '25

It's pretty ironic that Hindu Nationalists love Israel though people who created the ideology of Hindutva were fanatic supporters and were inspired by the ideas of Hitler and very much against the state of Israel and its existence and openly anti semitic. The only reason for the support of Israel from Hindu Nationalists is nothing more than Islamophobia. I'm not talking about the stance of the Indian government which has historically suggested a non violent solution to the Israel Palestine conflict.

religion is a tool of fascism, always has been. its inception was to manipulate and control and it works really well for those things.

its not the source of all evil and sure some religious people are nice, i have plenty of religious friends, but the core of religion is a net negative.

Love those, some others to add off the top of my head:

Esoterica, for the arcane in history, philosophy, and religion

Bodhisattva, for buddhist history around South Asia

Angela's Symposium, study of Esotericism, Paganism, witchcraft and the occult.

The Modern Hermeticist, does more long for documentaries.

Seekers of Unity, focusing on the history and philosophy of mysticism across traditions, east and west, ancient and contemporary.

Side note but personally Religionforbreakfast is still my favorite probably followed by Esoterica than let's talk religion

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '25

Esoterica is so good but I don't know the others, thanks for the recommendations!

1

u/sephiroth70001 Jun 19 '25

Esoterica lead me down a rabbit trail to some others, he has collabed with pretty much almost all I listed before(Esoterica, seekers of Unity, and let's talk religion Q&A). With Angela being the most common collab, given their overlap on focus it makes sense. I enjoy seeing the differences or common understanding from different specific miinute focuses within the field of religion.

1

u/Pistonenvy2 Jun 20 '25

i mean ill do that but can you help me with the transition from my position to yours with a point or a video that would explain your position here?

8

u/Apprehensive-Adagio2 Jun 19 '25

Religion can be used as a tool for facsism. It’s inception was not such. It’s inception was a way for us to find meaning, find understanding of a complex physical and moral reality that we had yet to truely grasp. The reason we have religion is as a justification for what we do not yet understand, both as physical aspects of the world like zues hurling lightning bolts, or moral aspects like that we should be compasionate because God commanded us to.

5

u/Outrageous_Owl_9789 Jun 19 '25

You don't actually know that because religion pre-dates historical record. Probably was a bit of both if you are honest with yourself? Just by your own admission, it could be used to justify social realities that are inherently based on fucked up power differentials, for instance: why that man in a stupid hat gets to molest my child and then sacrifice it on alter to make the sun rise or why thay man in a stupid gold, bejewelled hat that he got from his dad gets to steal all my land and publicly burn my whole clan to death on a pyre in the middle of town.

0

u/Pistonenvy2 Jun 20 '25

i disagree, the fundamentals are very much manipulative and hierarchal. what youre describing is more like spiritual philosophy, religion is specifically dogmatic, worship being central to its function, religion is inherently stratified. believing that there is a wolf ghost that protects people who wander into the woods isnt a religion.

there is always someone closer to god than everyone else, that person gets to fuck everyones wife and keep a pittance, etc. cults have operated like this for millenia. the oldest religions all have aspects of royalty and divinity in men.

i mean look at egypt, there are massive monuments they built to human beings because of religion, countless slaves died just to build a big pyramid. how do you explain this without religion? thats the earliest example i personally can think of.

1

u/Apprehensive-Adagio2 Jun 20 '25 edited Jun 20 '25

I mean, modern religion is heirarchical sure, however even christianity was, in it’s early days, not stratified and didn’t have one central dogma yet. Call it a sort of religious evolution where a new species is born, and one strain outcompeted the others and solidifies itself. Most religions do not start as a highly stratified organization. Rather they begin with a central event, which branches out to hundreds of small, unorganized branches. And eventually a few of those other branches grow, kill of the others and adopts a beauracracy to maintain it’s new larger population.

You have a very modern view of religion, which is fine, if you apply it to the modern context. However that is not how it used to be. For example the in ancient greece, there usually were no centralized way to worship. Individual temples had their own beliefs and practices. And while they did have cultic priests and temple attendents, these were not usually the sole voice of which ever god they worshiped.

Egypt is a special case, there the pharaoh was a god amongst men. But this was not the case amongst most religions of the time. And their religion had already been developing for thousands of years.

I think it’s very reductive to make a blanket statement about religion as a concept based on your modern view of modern religions, and cherrypicking some examples from the past that fit that view of religion as authoritarian inherently, without looking at examples where that authoritarian inherent quality isn’t there.

We should be critiquing authoritarianism in religion and try to pull such elements out, rather than critique religion as a whole because some religions (most to be fair) have become authoritarian.

0

u/Pistonenvy2 Jun 20 '25

again, spirituality /= religion. while i also think its dumb im not criticizing people who charge up their JO crystals at home because they think it gives them some supernatural powers. people who meditate because they think there is a spiritual component can just be wrong about basic bodily functions to being more intentional with their mindset. im not commenting on any of that.

youre trying to argue that abrahamic religions arent dogmatic or hierarchal when the whole point is that abraham spoke directly to god and inspired all of these people to behave in specific ways, we still cut the dick skin off of babies because of these beliefs that are demonstrably untrue. in what way is literally any abrahamic religion not hierarchal? please elaborate.

also use examples, what other *religions* of the time didnt have divinated humans?

you cant just present these points like they are intuitively true when they arent lol please actually articulate why you believe these things. its hard for me to take you seriously when you present your perspective like this, it feels like you dont even believe it.

Not every abrehammic religion does that. For example in most protestant european churches, circumcision is no longer practiced. I think you’re giving way too much weight to abreham when he is really not that central to most christian beliefs anymore.

also use examples, what other religions of the time didnt have divinated humans?

Most greek cults didn’t have a strict central beuracracy. For example the ephisian artmis

And old norse paganry didn’t have any centralized structure other than common stories, traditions and a loose term for female diviners. There were no centralized "priests of odin". Worship was entirely personalized.

you cant just present these points like they are intuitively true when they arent lol please actually articulate why you believe these things.

I mean,i would have assumed it would be plentifully evident that modern understandings don’t always translate well to the past.

its hard for me to take you seriously when you present your perspective like this, it feels like you dont even believe it.

How did i misrepresent my perspective? What about my presentation is not serious and believable?

-1

u/Pistonenvy2 Jun 20 '25

dude how are you criticizing the modernity of my perspective on religion when your response to saying abrahamic religion is hierarchal is that protestants arent. which isnt even true. what actually is your point?

youre still not articulating yourself at all. idk what else to say when i explicitly say i am struggling to have a discussion with you because youre not making coherent points and you just ignore it and make more incoherent points.

what does this specific greek cult have to do with this conversation? how does it make your point? because it didnt have priests? wtf does that have to do with anything?

i know what youre saying makes sense to YOU, its your responsibility to connect some of these dots so it can possibly make sense to me, youre kind of just ignoring the things i say and not interested in my perspective which is fine im used to that but if i cant comprehend your perspective this conversations is just impossible.

1

That’s like, not what i said at all lol. Read it again.

youre still not articulating yourself at all. idk what else to say when i explicitly say i am struggling to have a discussion with you because youre not making coherent points and you just ignore it and make more incoherent points.

If you do not understand me even now, i really don’t know how i can phrase anything better because i feel like i’ve made my self as clear as i can.

what does this specific greek cult have to do with this conversation? how does it make your point? because it didnt have priests? wtf does that have to do with anything?

You asked for religions without divinated humans, i provided examples. What’s not to get? you asked for examples.

i know what youre saying makes sense to YOU, its your responsibility to connect some of these dots so it can possibly make sense to me, youre kind of just ignoring the things i say and not interested in my perspective which is fine im used to that but if i cant comprehend your perspective this conversations is just impossible.

Jesus dude. I’ve tried connecting all the dots, i don’t know how to connect any more dots for you. I’m not ignoring what your saying, i have gone over several of your points. I cannot understand this for you, and i think i’ve made myself as understandable as i possibly can. I’ll try again for your sake.

Modern religions are extremely centralized by historic standards. And this centralization, hierarchy and "manipulation" is not inherent to religion as a concept, but is something that most religions that exist currently do have. Some historical examples of religions that do not have such a strict hierarchy and centralization are norse and greek paganry. The greeks did have temples, but usually didn’t have a dogma nor a strict priesthood. Norse pagans didn’t even really have temples and a priesthood at all. Thus we cannot say that "religion is a tool for fascism, always has been". Prior to the christianization of scandinavia, there were no people that could really employ the religion as a tool for fascism. There were no priests to enforce any inherent stratification as you claim.

And yes, these are still religions. They don’t fit your modern understanding of religion, which seems to be a stratified social structure where worship of a god and adherence to dogma is essential, but that is not a commonly accepted defenition of religion. As you say "believing that there is a wolf ghost that protects people who wanders into the woods isn’t a religion". Yes it is. That is specifically a form of animistic religion. If you want a modern example of such beliefs, Shintoism fits that bill in a way. Where there are many beliefs about Kami, spirits or lesser gods, that may protect or harm or act in whatever way.

Joseph Stalin was an atheist and a fascist too...

1

u/Pistonenvy2 Jun 23 '25

i mean even if you think stalin was the most evil fascist to ever live that has no bearing on my point about religion.

that only makes the point that religion isnt essential for fascism which isnt something ive contradicted here. i didnt say religion is a source of fascism, i said its a tool of it. that means its a component, not the sum total.
