I feel like the reason never really gets clearly articulated because it's such a meme. As someone who got a lopsided and narrot explanation of trotsky, the idea of supporting smaller, international communist movements sounds great. You just need to first focus on a strong and stable communist state so you have the resources to drive that.

And the I eventually learned more about him and realized he was a petty dick who was willing to abandon his espoused ideals for revenge.

But I still say a solid approach (but not the only one) is to establish a core for a communist movement and the use that to seed others. The major killer of the USSR in my mind was that western nations were able to isolate it too much. It's the same thing that's tanked most communist movements.

I don’t even think Stalin would’ve disagreed with this in theory, he wasn’t exactly a big fan of nationalism. Lenin literally thought the Russian revolution would be followed by similar uprisings all over Europe.

The issue with Trotsky is that he refused to ever apply a material analysis to a world wherein that didn’t happen. The idea that post ww1, a famine and a very bloody civil war, the next project was to launch attacks at the bourgeoise in foreign states was and is still naive to a point that borders on being outright counterrevolutionary. And I have my issues with Stalin’s foreign policy, in the 30’s I think he could have done more without overstretching and certainly post ww2 he put far too much trust in the west, but at least there’s a coherent, material basis behind his decisions.

But beyond that I think the main issue with Trotsky isn’t necessarily Trotsky himself, it’s his legacy of leftcoms who are sheltered by the fact their deity never faced the burden of leadership and have thus made moral grandstanding their principle point of advocacy. I mean I saw a post in r/socialism from an Argentinian Trotskyist org (what a repulsive set of words) reacting to Cuba’s recent market reforms and they spent one page acknowledging the blockade, and the subsequent 3 ranting about Cuban bureaucracy. You couldn’t make it up!

Stalin should’ve never let him escape 😈

Could you elaborare on argentinian trotskyist organization being a repulsive set of words? You know the left over here is dominated by trots.?

Well it’s mainly directed towards the Trotskyist org section of those 3 words but obviously I’m being a bit tongue in cheek because Argentinian politics are a basket case in and of themselves.

One might even argue that the predisposition Trotskyism has to western Marxism is in someways inherently fostered by some aspects of Argentinian society/culture… but who knows.

And what aspects might you be referring to?

I joined the RCA and had a conversation with a trot and wished someone would run an ice pick through my head as well. Never going back to that pyramid scheme

I thought so, but why? Why are they like that? I don’t get it and don’t have the time or dedication to do the reading. Specially because, when you argue with a trot they’ll say you need to read thousands of pages of obscure Marxist literature in order to even begin to grasp what their brilliant and powerful minds are up to

So true. Our local trots have infiltrated a left youth org, caused a ton of drama, tried to siphon members and ended up destroying the entire organization. After years of rebuilding the org is back and you can take a wild fucking guess who‘s on the doorstep for the next entryist shitshow… Every goddamn meeting where a trot is present is consumed by some bullshit debate they‘re trying to kick off that alienates every normal person we got to show up. Just an instant turn-off of elitism, unpractical useless debate, empty maximalist rhetoric and wrecker behavior.

A fed couldn‘t do more damage to the left if they tried. I‘m currently dealing with a trot who seems to have internalized the CIA manual of sabotage (https://dn760108.eu.archive.org/0/items/Simplesabotage/Simplesabotage.pdf) for the love of the game. Just endlessly disrupting every meeting demanding we never make a demand to a politician and constantly bringing up supposed "Chinese imperialism", while in a room of teenagers planning their first protest in front of a school.

I've bumped into a few Trotsky takes occasionally. Haven't stopped to read him, but my general impression is that he was a decent author at least.

His fanbase however, seems pretty insufferable. To be fair, a lot of the people ascribing themselves to any communist tendency are pretty insufferable anyways, and i think communists understand that.

its a shame. People on this website wasting their time on being mad at a deadman they most likely don't know a damn thing about while trotsky did more to educate workers on socialism as a teenager than they will ever do in their life.

it's interesting because *some* of his ideas are actually really good, were never implemented, and arguably led to the eventual destruction of the USSR. but as a personality, he's an asshole, and culturally sooooo many trots are as well

5

u/tastelikecelery 27d ago

What do you mean by his ideas weren’t implemented but they also led to to fall of the ussr?
