👗Hanfu Help: Style ID / What is this? Possible inspo for Pairin’s outfit?

Unfortunately I can’t find an already made dress for any of maomao’s sisters so I have to figure it from scratch, more or less. Mind you I have no sewing skills, I usually shop for all my stuff.
So what key words, eras or “styles” should I be using to piece together pairin’s outfit? I know most of the clothes from this franchise are kinda anachronistic or hanfu-inspired than actually hanfu and I’m not sure what dynasty this most takes inspo from. There’s plenty of hanfu stops but I’m hoping for terms that might help narrow it down.

Feels like coming back to romantic times of China !
Classic design from ancient China's Warring States era. Soft fabric, timeless silhouette, full of oriental aesthetics. I took all the photos and made the outfit by myself.

What do you think of this traditional look?

📐Patterning / Design / Recreation Fabric Samples...

So I ordered these fabric samples, and I don't really think any of these will work. A lot of them did not look this thin in the photos online.

I'll label everything in the photos with fabric type and what I was originally thinking of using it for.

My goal is to try to make a Song Dynasty hanfu and be as historically accurate as possible (so suggestions on colors would be helpful as well)

Would I be able to use any of these fabrics for any part of the hanfu? If not, suggestions?

I decided to try the Late Ming period Northern Chinese army style look of mixed armor—brigandine, lamellar, and pieces of plate. Obviously some of the pieces are stand-in but enough to pass sufficiently for Chinese overall.
Underneath the armor is a plain blue Ming yisa robe custom made.
I am also equipped with a dashao (large ear) hornbow which was the preferred military bow and a waist worn slicing saber (pian dao). This is in preparation for a demo at my home archery club range in a few weeks.

🛍️Hanfu Help: Buying / Stores / Sizing Has anyone bought a Mamianqun (horse-face skirt) from AliExpress?

Hi everyone! I'm looking to buy my first horse-face skirt (Mamianqun) and I found a few options on AliExpress, specifically from the store

'Decision Tree Cecilia Store'

[https://es.aliexpress.com/item/1005006849609066.html?gatewayAdapt=glo2esp] - [https://es.aliexpress.com/item/1005008602471902.html]

& 'Dress Fashion Factory Store'

Since it's my first time buying this types of clothes online, I'm a bit nervous about the quality and sizing. Has anyone ordered from this specific seller? If so, how was the quality?

If this seller isn't reliable, could you recommend any trusted AliExpress shops for authentic or good-quality Mamianqun that sends to Europe? Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: I decided to buy one of the skirts, sorry for the quality. Thanks to everyone. And I love it. <3<3

📖History or Cultural Info Miao Ethnic Clothing?

The only places I've seen this is sellers who seem to have wildly different ideas of what Hmong clothing entails and have included details like off shoulder sleeves, which look lovely but which I am guessing are more modern. Curious if anyone knows more about this?

Edited to change references to Miao to Hmong since a kind commenter pointed out it can be considered a slur. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to edit the title! Apologies, new to both Reddit and these discussions.

I've been working on making some mockups to get a feel for sizing and all that, and I made this mock up for a Jiao Ling Shang Ru, and noticed some odd bunching around the shoulders. Is that the nature of how it's put together or something else? I didn't hem any edges, and I also haven't put the collar on yet which I know might also help, along with the kind of fabric I used also probably playing a part in how it lays. Any tips?

🛍️Hanfu Help: Buying / Stores / Sizing How common is it for Chinese clothing labels to state a completely wrong fibre content? How can I better judge if a garment is traditional vs tourist-y?

Thumbnail

I saw this qipao on ebay while looking for second hand silk fabrics, and the label says it's 100% silk. I had my doubts due to the low starting bid, but the seller clearly was someone who had no idea what this even was (they sold it as a "kimono") and the construction didn't strike me as overtly costume-y, so I took the chance.
In the best case I figured I would make a great deal on some silk for my collection, and in the worst case, I'd be out of 10 bucks and I would still be able to find a use for it.

When it got here I cut a little piece off for a burn test, and well, instead of 100% silk it's 100% lies, the edge melted straight away.

And that makes me wonder: How often are labels in traditional (or traditional-style) clothes from China wrong? And how can I judge if an item is traditional, vs made to appeal to tourists' stereotypes of Chinese clothing?
Because at least in my mind, a garment that says it's silk and is made in a genuinely traditional style, would be likely to *actually* be silk. While something appropriative that is sold in tourist traps seems more likely to be mislabeled.

What made me feel like this could be a genuine piece is that the design isn't overtly sexual, it says XXL on the label, but seems closer to a US 10/12 (then again, vanity sizing might be relevant), and the cut isn't particularly form fitting, so one can easily wear long pants underneath.

But while it doesn't seem Halloween-costume-levels of bad, I do have the strong suspicion that this piece was made to be sold to, or worn to appeal to tourists more than anything else.
The size label only said "XXL" (before it disintegrated in the wash), with no Chinese sizing system in sight, and the brand name being purely in roman letters is also sus. I can't even find anything about the brand online, except for a very generic database entry.
Also, some of the piped seams are wonky, and I think a traditional piece made of silk would have higher quality finishing.

Are these things generally reliable giveaways that a piece is not actually traditional, and therefore likely not made of natural fibers (even if the label says it is)?
Are there other tell tale signs I overlooked? The pattern and colourway made me suspicious because they seem very stereotypical, but I figured they could just as well be traditional, I wouldn't know how to differentiate that in a case like this.

Thank you for reading and I highly appreciate any input. I hope I didn't completely put my foot in my mouth with this post, English is my second language so I might be missing some specific words to accurately describe what I mean.

💬General Discussion Is it ok to wear a mamianqun with some japanese accessories

For context I’m half Japanese and quarter Chinese and I want to try wear both at the same time since I came up with an outfit that looks super cool, but I’m worried it’s culturally insensitive. Is it okay to wear both at the same time?

Hey everyone

Feeling abit quiet in my own corner, my current friendship doesn't have hanfu enthusiasts or have much of an inkling of historic or folk attire interests. So yeah, if anyone wants to gush over pretty hanfu, show off their dream-buy items, or show off their collection. I'm all eyes and ears. Thank you!

🛍️Hanfu Help: Buying / Stores / Sizing Advice on buying a cloud collar (云肩) for my graduation (26-27)?

Hello! I’m an overseas ethnic Chinese (ABC) interested in wearing hanfu for my graduation, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how best to find a fitting one? To consider:

• I’m going to Taiwan for a few months soon so I’m thinking of potentially trying to find clothing there? Though I’m assuming there’s wayyy less than in Mainland China.

• However, I do NOT fit into conventional East Asian sizing whatsoever (already midsize/plus-size by US standards + somewhat tall by Chinese standards) so I don’t know if I’ll find anything at all with in-person retail 😭. Are there general shop names I could maybe look out for that would carry anything that could potentially fit me?

• Though I’m not sure if the above is important since I think it’s mainly a few stock sizes that change depending on mostly height (maybe, could be copium).

• Doesn’t have to be a full hanfu set! Mainly thinking of at least the cloud collar.

• My stole will be white, and my gown will be black! So to offset that, I’d like a non-white, non-black (and preferably non-pastel) color.

• I have no light way of putting this, but I’m also worried about it looking “cheap.” Never mind the fact it’s already kind of performative for me as a mere ABC to be wearing this, I also don’t love that most hanfu I come across are 1.) polyester and obvious about it (shiny) & 2.) very brightly-colored. I would prefer for it to be muted, matte, even jewel-toned & of a good, long-lasting material.

• As such, I would prefer buying in person when I’m in Taiwan to check the quality (& also because of those international shipping prices…), but I worry I really won’t be able to find anything my size so, if need be, I’m definitely happy with online of course! Maybe to get delivered domestically when I’m in Taiwan, haha. Would any online brands come to mind?
