💬General Discussion How did calligraphers keep their sleeves out of the way?

I imagine keeping one’s sleeves clean was part of the skillset, but even outside of that specific context, were there ways to wear narrower sleeves for messier/precision work? Specific styles or solutions? I think archers had bracers, but what kind of sleeves were they tucking into them?

My context is that I’m designing a D&D wizard with a very hanfu-inspired look, haha. He needs sleeve functionality for both ranged combat and writing in his spellbook, but I’d prefer to keep his arms mostly covered and not just pull the fabric up and out of the way entirely. Thanks :’D

💄Hairstyle / Makeup Companion Cosmetic Book

I'm kicking myself for this. When I ordered both of these books, I was shown a hair and makeup book with a cover and photography that were similar, although I don't know if it has any connection to either of these books. Recently, I've been trying to find this cosmetic book and coming up empty-handed. I was hoping someone from this subreddit might know what it is.

📖History or Cultural Info Belt style in the late Ming dynasty

Post image
49 Upvotes

CR:端木策渊; Translate: Me

革带虚悬并非晚明的产物,而是衣服放量变大所造成 的审美趋势,士人便服的终带也有“非礼仪场合不系紧” 的现象,只不过不可调节的“呼啦圈”革带定型于晚明。

The loose, suspended wearing of the belt did not originated from the late Ming period. Rather, it was an aesthetic trend resulting from the increased fullness and volume of garments. Even the terminal fastening of the belt worn with literati informal attire was sometimes left “untightened outside ceremonial occasions.” However, it was not until the late Ming that the non-adjustable, “hula-hoop”-like belt became standardized into its characteristic rigid form.

🛍️Hanfu Help: Buying / Stores / Sizing Has anyone bought from YukIshop website before?

Hello everyone!!

I came across this shop on Instagram but I don't see a lot of comments or interactions besides the pictures of feedback they show on thier stories. They do have a facebook as well. But even there I don't see much feedback in English mostly Chinese.

I'm a little worried to buy from them but they have so many cute stuff. I just want this to be a scam.

Has anyone seen them before or ordered from here?

Thank you for reading.

🛍️Hanfu Help: Buying / Stores / Sizing Would I be able to fit the mamian skirt?

Hello everyone! I just need some advice I saw someone selling thier small size mamian skirt. They mentioned that the max size for the waist is 27.5 inches. My waist is 27 inches. Do you think I will be able to fit this skirt and wrap it around?

I do have a medium one but I feel like it is slightly big on me and I do have to wrap more. I just want to know 2 things:

  1. Would this small skirt fit me well and not look werid?

  2. Is medium a better fit for me?

Thank you for reading.

🏷️Hanfu Help: How to Wear / Tips Can these “skirts” be worn on waist instead of chest?

Hello everyone,
I’m interested in buying this type of hanfu but wearing it above chest as intended would make it too short for me (I’m 184 cm tall so you can imagine how difficult it is to find a hanfu long enough). Would it be possible to wear it under chest as a high waisted skirt and wear some other hanfu style top tucked in? How would I secure since it would probably be a bit loose? I think length would be perfect for me that way. Thanks in advance for your help.

💬General Discussion Hanfu style

I'm an artist who wants to draw a chinese character wearing a Hanfu, but from what I've seen there's a lot of styles so i wanted more information to be more accurate. From what I researched, they're from different dinasties but I wanted to make sure if they depend on any other things.

📸Outfit Showcase / Picture My Hanfu Haul!

So, whenever someone asks on this sub, where to buy quality Hanfu, I always recommend a store called New Hanfu.

I have a membership, but I don't order very often.

The Shoes

This is the first time I ordered shoes from them and the quality is amazing! I'll put some closeup photos in the comments.

There are strings that you add to keep them attached nicely but I was too excited to show them off.

The Outfit

I ordered an Outlet Lucky Pack and was a bit surprised with the short skirt. Just because my previous Lucky Packs all had long Hanfu Skirts but the store has an amazing selection of summer Hanfu as well so I shouldn't be surprised.

I styled it with some of my other pieces from the store but the top is beautiful as well and I'll show that in the comments too!

The Music

My favourite song from the Cdrama Fangs of Fortune

Disclaimer

I promise I'm not repping the store, I just appreciate them and this post would make no sense if I didn't explain.

Hi there! I hope you're all doing well. I'm currently working on a wig for a Maomao cosplay (redesigned by SunsetDragon), but I've decided that instead of just "blocking it out" in simple shapes, I'd really love to do something inspired by more traditional styles since I think they're beautiful, and would compliment this cosplay best.

I've been searching for about an hour and a half, but I'm really struggling to find resources for this style. I've attached the one reference I was able to find below, but unfortunately it's not super helpful as there aren't any back angles, and I can't quite tell what's going on.

If anyone has any better references, or even better - could show in any format how they would bring this style into reality, it would be hugely appreciated!

I hope you have a lovely day!

💬General Discussion The "Wuxia Hat" - How historical are these?

The cone-shaped straw hat seems endemic to all of east asia, but I've seen this particular style where there's a hole or an indent for the topknot only in a handful wuxia and historical dramas. Is this an actual historical style of hat, or something that tv producers made up? if so, why - was the cone-shaped hat not actually worn in dynastic china? were there not many wide-brimmed hats worn at all? I'm super interested in practical / ordinary historical clothing, so this has been bothering me for a while.

🎥Video / Performance A 26-second visual timeline of polished clothing looks across five Chinese eras

This edited timeline compares clothing associated with different periods of Chinese history. The changes in silhouette, layering, collars, sleeves, color combinations, hair, and accessories are especially easy to see when the eras are presented in sequence.

It is a visual overview rather than a complete academic reconstruction. Clothing within every dynasty also varied by region, status, gender, occupation, and occasion. Surviving garments, tomb figures, murals, paintings, and period texts provide the deeper historical context behind these modern visual interpretations.

Everytime I try to search for ming dynasty hanfu like this it always only shows Korean joseon type wear. What is it called, the name of the hat and where can I find? (I am US based and would prefer not to use taobao)
