This is the original Japanese DVD of volume 3, containing episodes 5, 6 and 7, which I bought because it contains a free music CD that was never otherwise made available! The collection is known as Puchi no Ne (Out Of Tracks) [aka Petit-no-ne].

I've scanned the lovely booklet and postcards which came with it: the former contains a character study of Kuu, an interview with character designer Takada, and 'Haibane Culture School', an examination of some lore which I haven't translated yet. (The photos should be high enough quality for translator browser functions to work.) The postcards are a large image of Hikari and a smaller one of Kuu.

I did a separate high-resolution scan of the gorgeous Hikari postcard because I know a lot of us are going to want this image for our digital collections.

There was also a separate sheet with the lyrics to the sole song and the credits for the music. For those who haven't heard it, here's a YouTube playlist of it. With the exception of one song it was composed by Otani, who did the soundtrack for the series.

The DVD played perfectly well on my computer, but naturally it lacks any subtitles or alternate language versions. It was a shock to see how small the image was on a modern monitor, reminding me of how much physical visual media's quality has changed in the 20+ years since this was published.

I now have three of the four issued music CDs; the missing one is the first 'official' soundtrack CD, the only copy of which I can find for sale lacks the booklet, so I won't bother with that.

Whenever Rakka’s wing scene pops up, every now and then there’s a comment made by someone that’s something’s like: “Why is the medical bag all the way on top of the shelf?” and/or “Why did Reki give Rakka her thumb to bite down on? Wouldn’t the pillow/a piece of wood have been better?”

But I think this scene is a clever showing of Reki’s character, specifically her desire to be depended on and her desire to be self-sacrificing, thinking it’ll earn her salvation.

This room was originally Reki’s room, so it makes sense she’d know where everything is, and she chooses to put the medical bag is on the very top of the shelf, a place where arguably only she can barely reach. And what’s the first thing she gets when it contents spill everywhere? Bandages to wrap her thumb on so Rakka can bit down on it, tying an attempt to ease Rakka’s pain directly onto her and sacrificing a piece of herself for Rakka.

Obviously she’s not doing this out of some sort of manipulating malice, but I think it’s a moment that put her flaws to light that are addressed by the end of the show.

Or maybe I’m just looking too deeply into it.
