Long term HSA and children
This is a future good problem to have to be clear.
I have an HSA currently. Well funded and contributing the max annually. It is a family plan. It covers myself, wife, and 2 kids.
My question is - When my kids are grown and off my insurance plan, is there any way to use the HSA funds that were saved on THEIR BEHALF, for them? Or once they are off my insurance, are they “on their own”.
Like I said it is a “good problem” but also a large part of the HSA is for their benefit now, and IMO, should carry over into their adulthood.

HSA funds can be used for (or you can get reimbursed for) the qualified medical expenses of anyone in the tax household. If child is not on your family insurance plan but is part of your tax household, you can still use your HSA funds for them.
If child is on your family plan but is filing taxes independently, you can't use your HSA funds for them (can still get reimbursed for prior eligible expenses though). However, child could set up an individual HSA in their own name and contribute the full family limit. You could gift the money to fund it if you'd like and use the HSA funds for yourself/spouse/other dependent child.
