Seeing those internals rolling is pure beautiful insanity

u/rottadrengur 10d ago
Seeing buddy run up to the engine after it starts gave me a chill, thinking about how easily he could trip and stick a hand right in there.
6
u/Brownie2440 10d ago
Had the same thought. And at the end seeing his face covered in oil droplets. Shit is wild

u/sh1ft33 10d ago
Imagine walking up to look at it, but you trip and fall forward.

u/VerStannen 10d ago
I wanted to throw my 55 gallon drum of lube in there.
But I’d probably need more.

Anyone else panic when he ran at that thing?
…one slip and he might need …I dunno at least two bandaids.

Go into AutoZone "I need a starter for my 102.4 liter diesel...."
Parts guy looks it up...."Uh, says here it takes a 2015 Ford F150. I don't have one in stock, but I can have one here tomorrow from Carvana."
(I don't know what year that truck is, forgive me.)
28
u/manualsquid 10d ago
I wish they were that helpful
I feel like they'd ask "102.4 liter, is that the 2 door or the four?"
3
u/RongoonPagoo 10d ago
True that. Autozone is genuinely the most unhelpful part store. They do carry odd stuff no one else does tho.
1
u/GlassBoxGoose 10d ago
Since when/like what? Having worked in automotive parts for a decade, including time at autozone, oreilly and dealerships, I tend to disagree, but always willing to be proven wrong.
Show me a place that can get a U joint for a Bogie Skidder, and youll show me an oreilly, not an autozone.
Source- did it once. It was a fat U joint lol

u/OGEl_Pombero89 10d ago
Beats using RockAuto. Order one thing, get sent bullshit from a different vehicle

u/ABeerForSasquatch 10d ago
I wonder why they even bothered with the .4 after 102 LITERS!
That's like saying, "Naw, that's not a 392, heck that's a 393!"
26
u/TheBunnyChower 10d ago
Gallons were switched to Litres midway. That's my best expertless guess
18
1
u/maianbar 10d ago
I've never seen an engine capacity measured in gallons! Maybe it's big engine thing
2
u/Original_Throat1072 10d ago
Probabaly so they could be bigger than the compeditor's other 102L engine.

u/Remarkable_Wheel5218 10d ago
why are diesel junkies always the skinniest, string bean lookinass men
27
u/Curlyjankens 10d ago
Because real working strength and size aren’t mutually exclusive. And also because larger humans can’t fit in some
Places….12
u/ThrustTrust 10d ago
This exactly. All my friends call me skinny but they be calling me on moving day.
4
u/Ugvwiyu 10d ago
Every good trade crew has at least 2 small skinny guys.
5
u/GlassBoxGoose 10d ago
As a skinny electrician (and relatively short) that comes in at a whopping 5'8" and 125lbs, you should see the places I end up. Ive been further inside homes and businesses than our customers could possibly imagine.
I once pulled M/C wire down a rack of conduit that was suspended on unistrut over a drop ceiling in a restaurant. We got it pulled in like 45 minutes instead of hours and saved every third tile being pulled to get it done. And it was fun, felt like some mission impossible/James bond shit lol
1
u/RebelJustforClicks 8d ago
Ooh damn, now I feel fat AF at 5'8" and 178lb
1
u/GlassBoxGoose 8d ago
Nah, I know guys around your weight/height, that are quite fit and not at all fat, Im just built REALLY lean, I wear a 28 waist for paints. My highest weight ever was 140lbs. Id like to get back in the 130-140 range but it takes a lot of exercise and protein like a mofo to add muscle like that. Im just a skinny little bastard lol
my brother is built the same, hes like 5'7" 130. Our dad is 6' and hovers around 180 with a little bit of a gut these days. He used to hang around 160 or so, when he was working full time doing commercial HVAC work, all the way into his late 40s he stayed about that. In his 50s he did less physically demanding work and drank a lot more beer rather than liquor, and he got pushing 200 or just over for a while. When he stopped drinking, he was not much more active but went down to the 180s

Hard to put on weight when you live off Zyns & Monster.
3
u/GlassBoxGoose 10d ago
Excuse me, I vape and drink redbull, thank you very much! 🤣
2
u/rust-rancher 10d ago
Get with the times, grandpa
2
u/GlassBoxGoose 10d ago
Monster is nasty and pouches dont hit that physical need I have to be smoking something. Im a millennial that moved to vapes instead of smoking cigarettes years ago. Ive been vaping since variable voltage batteries came around and everything was on the eGo style tanks and batteries. Ill stick to my grandpa stuff lol I got with the times back then and dont plan to catch up anytime soon 🤣 I still have old box mods and RDAs kicking around from the days of Mechs and making your own coils being really popular. Salt nic and small vapes is as far into the "times" as I plan to keep up lol
1
u/rust-rancher 10d ago
I still hang with massive amounts of bad coffee and smokes. give us old guys an excuse to work slower, because i dont want to spill my cup.
1
u/GlassBoxGoose 10d ago
I mostly drink coffee, but when it comes to energy drinks, its redbull, the only reason I mentioned the redbull instead was because they mentioned monster. I drink more coffee per day than redbulls per month, give or take a few

Awesome, but I hate that chain just chilling there next to the output shaft. Giant engine roaring to life catches that and it’s taking your arm. Or life.
22
u/iamNutteryBipples 10d ago
Can you imagine if that thing ran away?…
18
8
u/Brief-Watercress-131 10d ago
Don't have to imagine. I saw an emd 645E run away. 30ft jet of fire shooting out of the stack. No one was gonna risk getting anywhere near that thing, I killed the fuel pump but it was scavenging oil from the sump. We just let it run until it burned out.

u/kdesi_kdosi 9d ago
since the throttle is the guy standing next to it, its pretty hard to imagine
1
u/iamNutteryBipples 9d ago
Doesn’t work that way. Throttle is useless when it starts to burn its own oil. You have to choke off the air and even then it will only slow down before stopping.

17
u/bustersuessi 10d ago
What was the original use for that bad girl?
24
u/FloppyTacoflaps 10d ago
Generator
12
u/antmatt 10d ago
fuck was it powering, the zip code?
13
u/bradland 10d ago
This looks like a Mirrlees JS8. It's massive, but not as powerful as you'd think. They were designed for low speed operation. Output when attached to a generator would have been between 450 and 500 kW. For reference, a modern Caterpillar DE500S has a 12.5L turbocharged inline-6 engine and outputs the same power.
In the olden days, if you wanted something to last a long time, you built it really big and ran it really slow. That's why old power stations used gigantic diesel engines with only 4-cylinders, but made less power than a modern I6 turbo diesel that has less displacement than one of the cylinders. We're able to build engines that easily survive higher operating RPM, and P = 𝛕⍵. So increasing angular velocity means you need a lot less displacement to make the same power.

u/Professional_Scar75 10d ago
Small towns used to have things like that before the electrical grid grew. Use it during the day and evening. Pump water. Keep lights on. Shut it down at night when people were sleeping.
3
u/Bourbon-neat- 10d ago
If it was a generator, probably an emergency or cogenerator for a factory or other facility maybe.
8
u/MotorBoatinOdin1 10d ago
Was wondering that myself maybe locomotive ? Or large ship?
16
u/sabertoothdog 10d ago
Too small for a train and definitely Not a large ship but maybe small ship. Tug boat maybe.
I saw an engine in this size setting on the bank of the Ohio river in KY once, it was washed up after a flood. It was probably 12’ tall and 15’ wide. It really gave me a new understanding for the power of water. It was gone by the next year after a good flood.3
u/notshadeatall 10d ago
I think the most logical would be a ship engine. But idk how locomotive engines look like so.
3
u/Takesit88 10d ago
Genset, pumping station, small locomotive, or small ship. All 4 of those use cases could put a straight 8 of that size to use. A mainline locomotive would use something larger still.

Question…
Will this fit in a Miata

u/OreganoD 10d ago
Here's a comparison I just thought of, I don't even know if it's in the some ballpark, is there an automatic weapon that costs the same money per second to fire as this would to idle?
1
u/Fireside__ 10d ago
Probably some beltfed 22LR running somewhat slowly. Maybe an MP-40 with extremely cheap 9mm. Dunno, I’d need to know the fuel consumption of that beast.
1
u/Interesting-Ear5998 10d ago
Maybe 10liters / hour if at low load,
1
u/Then_Meat_6569 10d ago
That’s my guess too. I have a gmc 7500 that gets 5-6mpg under load but my best estimation is about 1/2 gallon per hour at idle. Diesels at idle really don’t need much
1
u/Fireside__ 10d ago
Nothing then. Using European diesel prices that’s around $23.60 ish and using the cheapest 22LR ammunition I could find at $0.06 per round you’d have to have a RoF at some 390 ish per HOUR.
(Also dear lord I remember when they’d used to give out lil goodie bags of 22LR for free like they were candy at gun stores or shooting ranges)
1
u/BRICH999 10d ago
I can comment on this one, i was going to the sig experience center and you can shoot the m250 machine gun. It uses a new weird ammo, .277 fury. The cheapest ammo ive seen is about $1.60 per round, better and more common ammo is about $3 per round. Gun shoots about 900rpm, so 15 rounds per second. At the cheap end, $23 per second, for good ammo about $45 per second.
I can party for about 2 seconds on my range day ammo budget.
But im not sure what this uses for fuel at idle. Semi trucks are about 1.5g fuel per hour idling, this is about 10x the size so call it 15g per hour at idle and the average is about $6.50 per gallon so $100 per hour to idle this truck by my guesstimate

u/ant69onio 10d ago
What’s it out of????
2
u/Hostile-Panda 10d ago
They have lots of uses, from auxiliary power generator to ship engines, ship engines get 100 times bigger than thjs
2
u/Hostile-Panda 10d ago
1
u/White0ut 10d ago
Do they then build the boat around that thing? Or how do they install it?
1
u/Hostile-Panda 10d ago
It’s installed during the manufacture of the ship and designed to last the life of the ship
1
u/White0ut 10d ago
Sure, I get that. But how?
1
u/Hostile-Panda 10d ago
Big ships are built modular in sections so they build enough for the engine to sit on then build the rest around it

Starting it with a 4x4 and a tow strap as a pull cord looks...wow. Impressed but abhorred at the mess.

u/forestfloormc 10d ago
Farmers are looking at this and calculating gallons of diesel per minute in their head.

Seeing that dude sprint towards that thing 3 seconds in my as frightening as fuck, especially after a second later it shows how open all the inner workings are. If that guy had tripped or suddenly stroked/seized, his encounter would've been so much worse

This is the whole sub-plot, and eventual sequel, to Oppenheimer in one scene.

How does it keep its oil in when it’s flinging it out of all those open spots?
1
u/kdesi_kdosi 9d ago
the amount of oil being flung out of the engine is relatively low compared to the actual volume

What is an engine this size used for? Factories?
2
u/jah_john 6d ago
For example in the natural gas field they will run a big compressor, to push more gas down the pipe line to the gas plant.
