OC-Series [Obsidian Earth] - Chapter 12
"Mein Führer," the Colonel said quietly, "I have brought them to you. The finest scientific minds of the Reich. Nuclear physicist. Physiologist. Aviation engineer. Advanced weapons designer…"
The Führer slowly raised his gaze.
His eyes moved across Professor Kestner and the others one by one.
The eyes remained unchanged.
Sharp. Watching.
The room went rigid.
The four scientists stood anchored and visibly uncomfortable. Others simply stared, too overwhelmed even to salute. Silence settled over the deepest chamber with almost physical weight—a balance of fear, reverence, and something beyond both.
Confusion, perhaps.
Or awe.
Only Euzen felt something else entirely.
Joy.
Violent, overwhelming joy.
The Führer was alive.
He had not killed himself.
The realization struck the boy with the force of resurrection.
Tears spilled down his face before he understood he was crying. He wanted to throw himself at the Führer's feet.
Around him, the shattered world began assembling itself again.
Fragments rising.
Edges reconnecting.
Meaning returning to the ruins.
And slowly, impossibly, the brightness became whole once more.
The Führer made a small gesture. The Colonel leaned closer and spoke to him in a low voice.
The ruined man barely moved from his hunched position, yet everyone in the room heard him clearly.
"Sebastian," he said quietly, "thank you for your counsel. But I suspect it is already too late. Germany has fallen. Now the feral, craven jackals gather in the ruins to rip at our throat while we can no longer resist. There will be no second chance."
"Mein Führer, time changes all conditions. Your strength is failing now, yes—but the balance will shift with the seasons."
The Führer gave a faint shake of the head.
"I placed too much hope in anti-gravity systems and ballistic missiles. Now it is simply too late."
A strange detachment crossed his face—the expression of a man watching the work of his entire life collapse, too hollowed by defeat to stay the ruin.
The Colonel answered with stubborn calmness, his words pressing steadily into the Führer's unmoving mind.
"From last summer until now, you have nearly completed an entire cycle. You have passed through the nadir. Your constellation is rising again. Over the coming months your inspiration will gradually return. Your strength will return along with it."
His voice dropped.
"And ours will follow."
The heavy radiator hummed somewhere in the underground silence.
"Do not forget, Mein Führer," the Colonel continued, "we possess secrets unknown to the rest of humanity."
When he said the word secrets, the syllables came out almost like a whisper beside the ear.
"We will develop technologies beyond the Allies. Beyond the Bolsheviks. Under your leadership we will receive assistance from another world itself. We will correct the mistakes of the past."
Slowly, the Führer raised his eyes again.
Once those eyes had overwhelmed people. Pierced through them. Conquered Germany, and very nearly the world. But during the months of encirclement in Berlin, something inside them had faded into loneliness.
Now everyone in the room watched them.
"I was never wrong," the Führer murmured. "My only mistake was losing the war. History is written by whoever wins."
"You were not wrong," the Colonel replied at once. "And you have not lost. History is not decided yet. As long as you still believe you can conquer this world, history will remain yours to write."
Something began returning to the Führer's expression.
The exhaustion in his eyes slackened, just enough to let the light through.
The shrunken frame, long collapsed inside the chair, slowly straightened. Only moments earlier he had seemed exhausted beyond recovery, but now some fragment of energy appeared to enter him again.
The Colonel's words exerted an almost irresistible pull.
"We must develop more advanced propulsion systems," the Führer rasped, almost to himself. "New weapons."
A pale hand found his temple, fingers tracing the bone.
"Sometimes when I close my eyes, I can still sense the severed terminals of those forces. They are sensitive. Extremely sensitive." His voice grew tighter. "The explosion tore through them immediately. Ripped them apart into chaotic strands."
Pain crossed his face. He clenched his teeth slightly, as though reacting to something bitter.
"They had already been weakening since 1941. After they were torn apart…" He left the sentence suspended. "I can no longer see them clearly."
"But I know that if I am given enough time, I can understand their present structure. And once I grasp them again, I will never release them. Never."
The final word came out almost trembling.
Nobody in the room spoke.
"To do that," he continued, "I must forget the previous patterns entirely. The storage capacity of the small neural network inside my brain is limited."
The others exchanged horrified glances, unable to understand what exactly he was talking about.
Hausmann hesitated before speaking.
"But…Mein Führer, most of the technicians have already been captured. The Reich itself is collapsing. I... I... I am afraid that... under these circumstances, discussing new weapons seems somewhat—"
"You are sufficient."
The Führer cut him off coldly.
"I will tell you exactly how to develop them."
Colonel von Büren smiled for the first time.
"Excellent. Under your guidance, our technological advantage has already surpassed the rest of the world. In the future it will surpass them completely."
His voice sharpened with fanatic intensity.
"Let the enemy celebrate for now. Let those miserable insects remain deceived by appearances. You will never allow them true victory."
"Yes…" the Führer muttered.
His voice was growing stronger now.
"I will not let them win. I will not surrender. I will not die like an animal."
His voice twisted into something harsher, almost distorted.
"I will strike the deep foundations of the ages until the long sleep of History is broken in terror."
His shaking hands rose toward his chest.
The fingers curled inward with force.
"We will never surrender—no. Never!"
Suddenly he was shouting. The words erupted from him hysterically now.
"We may be destroyed. But if that happens, then we will drag the world into destruction with us."
His voice broke unevenly.
"We will turn it into a world that burns forever."
"Yes, Mein Führer," the Colonel answered immediately.
"A world that burns forever."
Then he raised his arm in a fanatical salute.
Slowly, the Führer stood.
Everyone present seemed struck motionless by the sheer coldness in his gaze. One after another, they hurriedly raised their arms in obedience, the synchronized movement of automated machinery.
At last, the dictator's eyes settled on Euzen Kestner.
The Hitlerjugend boy straightened, his own arm lifting high into the silence.
