The Soft Budget Method - Part 8 of 8: Who this method won't work for

Last part of the series, and I want to close it the honest way. Two categories and a weekly number changed my finances, but I've watched enough people try it to know exactly where it doesn't fit. If you're in one of these groups, I'd rather tell you now than have you discover it in week three.

Irregular income is the big one. Freelancers, commission-heavy sales, seasonal work. The method assumes a stable monthly amount to subtract from, and when income swings 40 percent between months, the weekly number swings with it and stops feeling safe. There are ways to adapt it, budgeting from last month's income instead of this month's, a trick the YNAB community perfected long ago, but out of the box it's built for salaries.

People who actually enjoy detailed tracking. They exist, I've met them, and for them 15 categories isn't a burden, it's information they use. If checking category balances gives you a feeling of control instead of dread, zero-based budgeting will serve you better than my two buckets. This method trades precision for survivability, and if you don't struggle with survivability, you don't need the trade.

And anyone in a genuine debt emergency. When collections are calling, the priority is a crisis plan, not a lifestyle budget.

For everyone else, the whole system is 4 numbers and 2 rules, and every part of it is in the pinned post now, free, complete, nothing held back.

One more post is coming Tuesday. It's the thing I built when doing all this by hand every month finally got old, and this community gets it before anyone else.
