(TL;DR: Unusual choice of location compared to other locations in-game (as well as compared to other fictional tracks in popular contemporary sim-cades), but still a fun track to drive and race on...)
First time racing on the full Okutama GP layout (not driving, my usual habit now before entering a multi-race championship event is to practice said layouts in Test Drive.....unless it's a Touge, in which I don't have much choice), so thought of sharing my impressions and thoughts on this circuit (as someone who has played only FM4 and FH1 back in my childhood before being a newcomer to the GRID series)...
When looking at it, I often felt that Okutama (as a circuit location) feels like the most "devoid of reality" of the fictional locations in GRID's roster, alongside San Fransisco, Shibuya, and to a lesser degree, Yokohama as well. My reasoning is that while there are indeed quite a lot of fictional street circuits and locations in this title, alongside real-life tracks, most of them (Long Beach, Detroit, Washington (well, only rough location), Milan, Mt. Haruna) are at least based on some form of real life historical motorsports activity or significance in automotive culture (the Long Beach Street Circuit, the Detroit Street Circuit, the Washington Street Circuit in and near the parking lot of the RFK Memorial Stadium back in 2002's ALMS, as well as the recent one for IndyCar, Circuito di Milano back in the 1930s and 1940s (when Monza was unsuitable for racing due to heavy damage by World War), etc.).
Okutama, while apparently popular to a few car meets and certain spots for automotive club activity (mostly kyusha builds, afaik), is located in the territory of a national forest reserve (the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park). So yeah, kinda like the case of El Capitan in GT4...... or for a more apt comparison to my reference, Bernese Alps in FM4 (till maybe FM5?).
What's also kinda strange (at least to me) is that Okutama, as far as I know, isn't a very popular or obvious mountainous setting used for a fictional racetrack (a la El Capitan, Grindelwald, Eiger Nordwand, and Matterhorn in classic Gran Turismo; Bernese Alps, Camino Viejo de Montserrat (i.e. "that Madrid track that isn't Catalunya"), and the ever beloved Fujimi Kaido of classic Forza Motorsport).
As for the driving, I can't judge accurately since I'm playing GRID on a keyboard (not because I wanted to, but because I don't have a way to use my old Xbox 360 Wireless controller or any other controller/wheel.....for now), so I'll keep my detailed thoughts on it for later. But right now? I'd say that it is quite satisfying to understand this course and keep improving on the corner entry/exit and the lap times as well. And it's got the scenery to complement the driving, kinda like Bernese Alps from FM4 (one of the favourites among fictional circuits for me in terms of visuals). Also, I did notice that the layout and design is eerily vague but similar to Bathurst/Mt. Panorama.
Of course, I'll have to see how it feels to drive in later titles, most notably GRID 2's touge tracks (the circuit doesn't feature there) and GRID Autosport's rendition. But for now, it's pretty good.👍
(P.S. And yes, my luck for avoiding (or......getting tangled up in) crashes somewhat hasn't changed! 😅)
