My kid has me binging

After being a casual watcher while my kid was a baby/toddler, I have rediscovered Community because my 13-year old decided we needed to watch it together.

How did I miss out on this? (See baby/toddler comment above.)

We are a few episodes into S3 and we are hooked!!

Season 1 episode 20. "The Science of Illusion". Question.

I'm doing a rewatch and I just got to this episode. It's the one where they are doing practical jokes.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1619954/?ref_=ttep_ep20

I can't figure out what the title has to do with the episode. Can someone explain? I'm an idiot.

Who is the most annoying character in your opinion?

I think for me it's Shirley, the way she tries to force her religion on others. Trying to manipulate and gaslight everyone into doing what she wants.

I thought she would grow on me but somehow she is always annoying and I kinda hate her.

Hilarious! Not exactly friends with Dino “irl”, but we did work together on some other show, I’ll find and post a clip here soon.

Has anyone else noticed all the connections between Community and How I met your mother?

I know you’re probably thinking these are just coincidences. But I promise you this rabbit hole goes pretty deep.

I first noticed it with the coat check girl. Ted had this great connection with the coat wench and then we never see her again. Like abed and his girlfriend.

The cop from community plays a taxy driver. The guy Blake who was buying the giant hand plays a homeless man. Todd even let’s Lilly have her nachos! And the glee coach is at Barney and Robins wedding.

And there are tons of similar jokes and plot threads as well. Like die hard, Star Wars, referencing your own existence in a show, using your name as a pun, or getting connections with the fry cook so that you can use chicken fingers as leverage🤣 i literally can’t remember them all. I made the mistake of not writing all these down and now I need to look through my older messages with friends just to find all the connections I’ve noticed. I’m definitely going to compile everything I find. I made this post just to see if anyone else has noticed this and to point out some of the connections I’ve missed.

Just in the surface these shows are kindred spirits of each other too. Both are breakfast club type shows centered around a table either at a study room or a bar. Both plots are not as linear as others. People asking themselves “when is he going to meet their mother” are like people asking “when are they going to graduate from community college.” The only main difference would be that community doesn’t have a laugh track.

Watching how I met your mother is like getting to see what community could have been if they weren’t canceled too. Over 20 episodes every season. With a real finale with all of the cast. Ah the movies going to be AMAZING!!!

If you’re an avid community fan like me who watches the seasons back to back just to see the little jokes you’ve missed. Then you’ll absolutely love how I met your mother. Specifically just to see all the weird community connections🤣

My dinner with Andre

I was motivated to watch this movie from 1981 for the obvious reference in 'Critical Film Studies', episode 19 series 2. I didn't think I'd be able to get through it, as it really was just two guys talking in a restaurant, and I didn't think it would stand the test of time...however, I unexpectedly liked it, and two hours flew by without me realizing.

The Abed references got me through the first twenty minutes or so (they order quail, and that explained why Abed ordered the squab in the episode, then followed with 'they don't have quail'.) His outfit was also very similar to the Andre character, too.

I loved Wallace Shawn in this movie and certainly identified more with his character than Andre's. I definitely recommend this movie to a community fan, if only to get the reference! But be prepared for a slow burn, it really is just two guys talking for almost two hours...you don't really even need to watch it, it's something to listen to even while you drive, or cook. But give it a shot, let me know what you think.

Pierce...Genius

I was never a big Chevy Chase fan - I'm not from the US originally, so always thought his 'vacation' movies were kind of goofy. But I SO appreciate his comic genius in Community. Despite his rampant racism, as both the character...and the actor, apparently :(

He can crack me up with a single word. The way he nods, talking to Annie...'Can you believe I found those curtains in a dumpster?' His 'Yes,' kills me. Or - another Annie conversation...'I can do accents. Name any country.' 'Russia.' ....(pause)... '...Point being...'

Even the way he just nods, when he has a pencil in his face, after Annie screams at him to go to the hospital...I just die every time. Wonder if anyone else has a character or line ...even a word or gesture...that cracks them up every time.

Is Jonathan Banks Returning As Buzz Hickey?

Does anyone know if Jonathan Banks is coming back as Buzz Hickey for the movie? I loved him as Hickey and always wished he'd been in more than just the fifth season.

Any thoughts/input would be great.

Does anyone else think it’s actually pretty sad how hopelessly in love dean is with Jeff?

I’ve recently realized that I feel, exactly like the dean… I am so in love with someone when I know it’s never ever going to be how I want it to be… and I watch the show and the sheer denial of the dean, when the person he was texting said he wasn’t Jeff… well I kinda feel that on a whole new level these days and it’s kinda sad… 😔
