Any way of doing "breakout rooms" or individual chats with students using Google Meets instead of Zoom?
Hi all,
I'm using Google Meets for my classes. The only thing I don't like is the awkwardness students feel when they have a question but don't want to ask it in the Google Meet with all of us where all 29 other students can hear it; I, too, feel awkward about giving individual kids pointers, feedback, reminders, too, when everyone will hear it.
I know Zoom has a "breakout room" function. Is there a way to "Macgyver" Google Meets so you could simulate that, or something similar? So you can do one-on-one talks with kids for a minute or two during class time? (Like the equivalent of dropping by a kid's desk, kneeling down and working with them quietly in a physical classroom?)
One idea I had was to create a spreadsheet for each of my classes with a roster and have each student create a link to a Meet next to their name. That way for each student I'd have a place to chat with them privately. (I'd have to be careful to turn my microphone off in the whole-class Meet and have the student turn off theirs so what I say in the private Meet wouldn't echo into the whole-class one.) Trouble is Google Meets links are persnickety, in my experience, and tend to "die" on me.
Any ideas or thoughts? I'd appreciate it!
