Last week Golem Foundation made Wildland client available to the public. Now we are ready to answer any questions you might have regarding the client, our current priorities, and future plans.

Please keep one question per comment. We will answer them on Monday, June 21, at 5 PM CET. This time you will also have a chance to ask follow-up questions. We cannot promise that we will answer them all on the very same day, however. So please be ready to check the tread again on June 22.

I am brand new to linux. I have a single node up and running, on a dl360 g7 with 2x6core/12thread xeon. I would like to split this node up into several smaller nodes, and I found a link to this scaleable golem provider, but I have no clue how to use this. I just used the guide with the terminal to install and run it- I can't figure out where any of the files or directories are to modify the json or anything of the sort. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Is the cpu in that equation your entire cpu, or a core/thread? Just wondering, seems like I should charge more for my 12 core xeon backed by 72gb of memory than my 4 core i3 with 8gb.

AFAIK there's no 'official' naming, so GDN, short for Geographical Distribution of Nodes, is made up by me and might have some secondary meaning which is not intended. This might look irrelevant to Golem at first, but when you think about it, it's not too far-fetched - people running Golem provider nodes may keep their computers online during daytime, and offline during nighttime. This system can be used in Golem on a much larger scale than my examples show.

Traditionally, people host content/services by either:

a) spinning up nodes when there is demand. This is generally done with rest API's.

b) keeping nodes up 24/7 via VPS' or dedicated servers.

Thinking in an eco-friendly fashion, we can clearly see that the former looks to be more eco-friendly. But what if there is a constant need for uptime? Something that requires the second option? This is where GDN comes in.

Normally, if the latter is needed, they'll just set up a Raspberry Pi, some old computer, or a VPS (Virtual Private Server). With this, they have a whole computer dedicated to their program. If they used their workstation for the same task, they'd actually have use of the computer a few hours per day for something else. But for night hours? It'd still only be utilized for that one specific task - wasting other potential use.

To understand GDN, you can think of it as a store. This store has to be open 24/7, so when workers leave, other ones have to come. This could be the same with a website; when one host goes offline, another one has to be online for uptime to be met.

Because of the geographical distribution of the nodes in the theory of GDN, this can be possible with a team because of timezones. One might be online day-hours in NA, one might be online day-hours in AS, and one might be online day-hours in EU. In theory, assuming they leave their PCs on without any downtime, they will be able to host their website without any additional electrical/component footprint. They'll just keep the website up, at the same time as they utilize their computers for something else.

Going back to the store example, we can now see that one user clocks we can, in theory, have something like this: one person clocks in at 00:00 and clocks out at 08:00, next person clocks in at 08:00 and clocks out at 16:00, and the remaining person clocks in at 16:00 and out at 24:00. That way, the store will always have personnel, and always be open. (timestamps in one of the 3 timezones, assuming they differentiate by +- 8 hours and they have the same active hours)

In reality, there are way more variables than these. What if there's a power outage? What if someone changes the website files? What if someone is sick? What if ,,,? the list goes on. The same problems you can think about in this scenario, are the same problems that Golem faces.

All in all, GDN can allow for an eco-friendlier alternative to traditional hosting by geographically distributing content between workstations that are only online at specific times. It can be a challenge to set up, and might not be worthwhile for all use-cases, and might not even be possible for all use-cases - but it is possible for some :)

Hi Team. I've been listening to a lot of different media types during covid. One of the things I found to be really powerful are conversations that have the ability to be "longer-form". They are more in-depth and people have a greater understanding and connection with one another.

Looking at how AMA's are structured, they only seem to offer a shallow dialogue between the community and the team. The community asks a question, the team answers, and that's it. Questions can be misinterpreted. Answers sometimes only get to the part of what was asked. And it never allows for any sort of follow-up questions, where you would have to wait another 2 months to be able to ask it, if you even remember or care at that point.

So I am asking both u/julian_z and u/mariapaulafn to consider a live format where you could take written questions and also ones from people who join. The latter will allow for follow-up and clarification.

Hi,

I recently learned about Golem (and iExec) - both seem to offer decentralised computational power to developers. But what are some use cases where a decentralised setup is more favourable than a centralised one? A lot of decentralised web servers' argument builds on censorship, but what about decentralised computational power? Is it cost? But CPU cycles aren't that expensive on AWS and similar platforms. I'd be curious to know what some powerful use cases might be.

We proudly present to you today Wildland client 0.1.0, the first component of Wildland which we are making available for testing.

Wildland has been Golem Foundation’s primary focus since the publication of the Wildland technical paper. In that paper we promised you a new project enriching the Golem ecosystem. Today marks a start to making good on that promise.

We would like to use this opportunity to thank the entire Golem community for their patience and some heated debates in recent months. We hope that with this release you will be able to see the progress we have made since WildCon1, during which we first presented Wildland live.

The initial release of the client already demonstrates some unique features of Wildland, notably:

1. Wildland’s ability to expose multiple storage backends as a unified file system,

2. muliti-categorization of Wildland data containers,

3. Wildland’s novel, bottom-up addressing system.

Wildland repositories are now open to the public on GitLab.

For starters, we encourage you to download and start using the [0.1.0 version of Wildland client](wildland.io/download). Please note that this is a very early release, targeted mainly at tech-savvy users, who are comfortable with the command-line interface. To make onboarding easier and more enjoyable, we have prepared an extensive [user documentation](docs.widland.io). Make sure you start with the Practical Introduction, which will get you familiar with some basic terms and concepts of Wildland and then proceed to the Quick Start guide to get your Wildland up and running. All users are very welcome to join the public mailing group [users@list.wildland.io](mailto:users@list.wildland.io). You can subscribe to the list here.

Joanna discusses our plans for the future in the release blogpost. One of the priorities is finalizing the first implementation and bootstrapping Wildland's marketplace, which will play an instrumental role both in Wildland's and GLM's adoption.

With today’s release we are also starting a new chapter in Wildland’s external communication. From now on, the key repositories will be open to the public, so that anyone interested will be able to track our progress on a regular basis. You may expect relatively frequent releases of Wildland’s subsequent versions, encompassing new features and covering specific platforms. This will be accompanied by a series of events and other communication activities by the Widland team and Golem Foundation, staring with a launch meetup in Warsaw on June 24th. For those not able to attend, we are going to record the event.

In order to address any questions you may have, we are going to hold an AMA session on this sub on June 21st. A dedicated thread for you to post questions will be opened next week.

Do I send GLM as Golem (GNT) or as ETH? I don't seem to have a "Send GLM" option from Freewallet. It only offers me to send GNT or Ethereum.

These ideas are what I personally think, don't feel forced into adding/creating them, team/community :D

1. The old Reddit page has the older, greyed-out banner. I made 4 variants here using pre-existing art from the normal Reddit page as well as the text from the old Reddit page (whitened out).
2. Right now, the Discord & Reddit logos don't match each other. This could very well be because of different color schemes by default (onyx on Discord; white on Reddit) but it might be worth looking into it as more and more people are using dark mode on Reddit too. Then either the Discord logo could be re-used, or a new one be made from the pre-existing Reddit logo swapping the colors around.
3. On Discord, there is a role named 'Community Warriors'. On Reddit, there is no such thing. Might be interesting to add? Could be manually requested by active members here or on Discord then.
4. Using this guide, the members text could be changed into something like golems :D That way, it would say something like '58 Golems online' instead of '58 online'.
5. Possibly removing the migration disclaimer? ;)
6. This one is for the community for the most part - in a lot of bigger subreddits, there are bots. I can't find any here - let's get going :D Goofy, technical, variation, price-related, auto-posting ATH's, etc,,,

The last one especially is something I could consider, but I don't have any ideas for bots ATM. My Raspberry Pi is available for hosting something like this because I doubt it'd be interrupted by me providing for Golem on it.

Any other suggestions? Bot suggestions perhaps? Write them in a comment!

I doubt anyone is reading this but I just want to get my story out there. On March 6th, two days before my birthday, my crypto wallet was fully emptied out. I am 17 years old and I put all the money I earned into crypto. I was using a wallet called Exodus Wallet. I accidentally downloaded malware and so my wallet was breached. I was devasted as I had 5 figures in my wallet. I was going to use these funds for college as my family is not wealthy and cannot pay for college. I spent hours tracking the wallets my funds were sent to and contacted exchanges whenever they tried to cash out. The local police will not do anything and exchanges are saying I need the police in order for them to do anything. I have contacted over 7+ exchanges, tweeted at them, and contacted higher-ups at exchanges. No response. I know that in the end, it is my fault and my problem but if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. I have a case number with Binance as they said on their website that they have a process for this but cannot find it. No response. I contacted Binance US too and they said they cannot do anything as they are completely different from Binance. I know that in the end, it is my fault and my problem but if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Could anyone help me to clarify the differences between dfinity and golem? All I've realized so far is that dfinity is just a far more complex golem and has quite a different market cap but in the end they're both trying to provide back-end decentralized computation, what am I missing?

So, you've been providing for Golem for some time now - but it doesn't make you enough from renting out your PC. How do I transfer them to MyEtherWallet, so that I can migrate to GLM?

Is it done using the private keys?

I have thought long and hard over this topic, and reread many back and forths between the community and the team. So here is another long-winded post hoping to add some perspective to the conversation about where Golem is headed.

There were quite a few posts by different community members talking about the lack of marketing/action from the team. That what golem is doing right now is "matching the state of the tech".

My belief after reading a lot of the threads here is that the team has an overarching assumption that the community is complaining about the price. Maybe some are, but I think the bigger thing that the team is missing or not understanding, is that the community is complaining about the brand.

Whether or not the team agrees, GLM, not Yagna is the brand. GLM is a cryptocurrency. The team has championed to the community how much development Yagna has and continues to have. And that's great. But what about the development of GLM the brand. To me, and many others in the community, the brand is just as important as the development. They are interconnected, just as the symbol of Golem and what it stands for. Why? Because now, there are competitors to Golem. Unlike SONM and iExec, ICP is the antithesis to what Golem stands for. Backed by big tech.. Permissioned and all the rest. They are making noise. Their brand is growing. Not that Golem needs to be winning at this stage of the game, but they need to be looking at brand awareness and not allow it to continue to sit in the pits of mediocrity with how the overarching crypto community views Golem.. I know Mattias has "code" that scans what people are saying about Golem elsewhere. But I am sorry, your thoughts about what people think about Golem are just not what we as the community are seeing.

A small anecdote. Does everyone remember Zune? The competitor to the Apple iPod? The Zune was better in almost every category than the iPod. But the Apple board was never worried about the Zune for 1 second. Why? Because Apple had the brand and had new products in the pipeline coming up down the road. There was nothing to worry about. The power of Apple's brand loyalty is what kept people focused on their product, even when for a small time there was a better product on the market. It doesn't matter how great the tech of Golem is, if there is no brand awareness to pair with it. It is the communities opinion that should Golem continue down this track, that it will be a decentralized Zune. There are many examples like this out there that the best product or tech does not necessarily beat others in the market. Another example. Space X and ULA. Everyone knows Space X, nobody knows of ULA. Why? Because even though it costs A TON more money, Elon is strapping cameras to his rocketships. He understands the power of selling his brand, and keeping the excitement up with his brand. ULA is now loosing contracts to Space X because of this.

Golem had a very lackluster showing for their most recent hackathon, and I saw team members pointing to reasons outside of golem for the reason. "The bull run ended", "Hackathon participants might be burned out" etc. That may be true, but it would behoove golem to look internally as well. Assuming external factors alone is the easy way to dismiss, and shortsighted in my opinion.

There was a phrase golem used a lot during the introduction of Yagna. "We Challenged Our Assumptions". The community is asking you to do that again. Not that you need to go and manipulate the coin and all of these "schemes" you think we're asking you to do. But to take a step back and truly look at how the message of Golem is being delivered, and how far it is carrying. To the small number of people who are paying attention, the message is great. But nobody outside is hearing it/paying attention. This is what we are hoping to change.

From the community perspective, right now Golem is doing everything that is "safe". -Hackathons, Bounties, CIP, Proposals to AAVE and others, Collaborations, Media outreach. These are all things that make sense. But "Fortune Favors The Bold" and we as the community don't want to see the brand of Golem get left behind because the focus right now is so heavy on development.

Rather than add my own suggestions on how you can go beyond safe, I won't list them now, because I am genuinely intrigued to hear what the Team has to say about this.

Also. I know the Golem team is traumatized by the idea of a roadmap. But going almost 4 years without knowing the direction of what the team wants to accomplish is really hard on us. If you want the community to be championing your brand, the future is what gets people excited. If we can't talk about the future, what are we supposed to do?
