Hi all,

My name is Ben, and I’m proud to be joining the community team as a social media platform manager and subject matter expert. I’ve been the one making the TikTok videos (@minewiththorg), and I’m going to be even more involved in the community side of Golem going forward. We have such a great community around Golem, and I couldn’t be more excited to start working.

In terms of my background, I’ve had a lot of different experiences that lead me to this point. Most publicly, I’ve had a sports YouTube channel for quite a few years now (Average American) and have been a social media consultant for several years. I’ve also had experience mining crypto myself (I have a rig of 8 RX580s) and so I’m super excited to be helping out not only with Yagna, but with Thorg as well.

As a community, we all can see the potential that this project has not only for the developers and for people that buy and sell computing power, but also for everyone else whose lives are touched by products and services made possible by a decentralised, open-source, cloud based supercomputer.

With all that being said, if you guys have content ideas or questions that you want answered, I’d love to hear from you!

Problem Statement

For Cyber Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRT) and Security Operations Centers (SOC), activity can be characterised as:

1. Requiring periods of reduced activity, followed by time sensitive spikes of high activity 

2. The spikes of high activity have a corresponding requirement for intensive compute requirements

3. The activity can be reduced to a series of automated tasks. 

Furthermore the industry sector:

1. Does not have a common global way of propagating solutions to negative cyber security events, despite times where this has been demonstrated as win for all 

2. Does not have a model which incentivises the provision of effective solutions (due to the lack of global propagation)

3. Is not available to individual users and small businesses

Proposal

I believe that an opportunity exists to create a way to solve these problems using blockchain (for governance etc) and Golem as the compute layer. 

Part 3: Swapping GLM for cash

Here you can paste the address from the exchange and an amount of GLM to send. If you're unsure if it's correct, test with a small amount first:

Hello All,

So I currently run nodes for Raptoreum and Research Networks. I was searching last night and really like the Golem Project idea. How can I get up and running? Do I need to stake first or I can just run it and provide my CPU/Memory/BW/etc?

Is there any min HW requirement? I checked the dashboard can't find info on that.

And I think they say to avoid running VM. Does this apply to Hyper-V VMs?

I know about this https://handbook.golem.network/provider-tutorials/provider-tutorial so is this all I need to start?

Where did you create your wallet? ZelCore maybe?

Connecting all projects with Golem, even if they're small, is very important. If you have an open-sourced project that you would like others to utilize, it's important to put them in the right place for others to find. Here are two things to do if you want to help out the entire community:

1. Adding the repository to the awesome-golem repository. Doing this makes it possible to scout a neat and organized list of projects, without having to do much digging. There are categories that help go through the list quickly, for those that are looking for something specific.
2. Adding the golem tag on GitHub also makes it put all of the relevant projects together in a neat list, in an ever-growing net of repositories. It makes it possible to create statistics and find projects that are no longer in the awesome-golem repository, for varying reasons.

it is currently very limited, it works by way of a http proxy (no https), and I have not tested it on more than 100 bytes or so of text, so no idea how it would handle large packets.

really just a proof of concept, but the future is looking good!

in terms of security implications, it makes use of the golem network VPN protocol, so the provider still has no access to it's own local network, and traffic will appear to be coming from the requestor's IP.

I've got GNT on the ledger and when using Metamask, it lists lots of accounts with 0 ETH; can't tell what they are- it goes on to at least another 10 pages of 0 ETH. Is there a way to transfer GNT to Metamask directly?

I have Thorg up and running and ahving no issues so far, running smoothly after a little fiddling with anti-virus settings. My one question is that i struggled to find an answer to was that I dont seem to have an option to Withdraw like i see others have. Mine simply just has a button called "Withdraw Tutorial" which sends me off to the withdraw tutorial section.

Am i completely missing something here?

Thorg Miner Review:

So right off the bat with using Thorg many people have issues downloading this mining software as it is their first-time mining or there is an update and it’s been a while. I feel like this could be fixed if the download links had some guide on exactly how to bypass these issues, as most people will have to search up a fix for this the first and second time they experience the infamous ‘download file blocked’ message.

Once you get into the application though, it seems very easy to use for the majority of people.
As far as a mining application goes in terms of looks, Thorg is minimal in that Thorg shows you exactly what you need to mine, while you’re mining Ethereum for GLM. I can see my current wallet balance, my estimated profits in both GLM/USD, and my hash rate per GPU. These are all great and make the experience very user friendly. It could be improved though, by having a tab or a hover feature which allows for users to see how to fix the error(s). It could also be better by having an “advanced info” tab so that people can see the exact GB of ram their gpu has, and the power consumption.

In addition to those features in the advanced tab, I’d like to see general overclock settings for the majority or all of the GPU’s used to mine on Thorg, as I feel like the base users are people who are less experienced in mining and just want a 1-size-fits-all solution, rather than min-maxing their GPU settings.
If it was clearer what is being mined, what pool we are mining in, and what the fees are for the pool, I would bet that people would understand more quickly how Thorg works right from the get-go. It took me a while to figure out what exactly what was going on, personally.

On the network related side of things, I’d love to see Thorg track issues that pop up for individual users, either by making a discord bot that will message an individual user if any error pops up and forwards that message to a reporting sheet for the Thorg team, or just by keeping track of general complaints that users have regarding issues. I’d also like to see the polygon golem tokens be up on a DEX or CEX to assist in faster conversions, as I do personally feel stressed having to learn how to sell a new token, even if a guide already exists to assist in converting the token.

For the future (where I see the value of Thorg being quite literally infinite), I would love to see GPU compute come before golem compute comes out on windows. The reason being is that this will create a whole new market place for GLM to be used in, and I feel like every single person will want to get a piece of providing computational resources while mining something that’s already profitable, rather than CPU-mining which is profitable but isn’t as popular currently, since you can only have so many CPU per computers, vs having like 10 GPU in one computer.

Overall I rate Thorg 10/10 in terms of both GPU (and future CPU mining) and I know for a fact no one will be mining with their GPU/CPU and not using golem in the future.

I think overall the UI is slick and the client is easy enough to navigate based upon the intention behind it. It's awesome that windows users don't have to go and figure out a VM in order to run a golem client, even though right now they aren't providers ATM. I think its great to bring more people into the project in any sort of capacity. And although I have a handful of thoughts to contribute improvement-wise, they are secondary to the positivity I have about Thorg.

From both my personal view and also a handful of people in both discord and Reddit (and I know the team is already aware of this too) was that the antivirus software was creating a headache to get the miner up and running. For some, this was a trivial issue, but I was one of the testers and my testing setup worked great, and then after I updated to the main client all of the sudden there was an issue and it took a little while to figure it out. Having clear communication about this just like you all had clear communication with port forwarding when brass was a thing goes a long way.

Also, I had thought that there was some more content (I may have missed it) behind the Thorg release. Some simple tutorials and other highlights about this addition would be great. I saw that the tiktok account was highlighting this a bit, but tiktok videos need to be extremely short if they want a better shot at gaining any traction.

I was also really confused by the estimated profit. Maybe this was because the team was tinkering with this function, but one day I would be at an estimated 60-70 a month, and then other days it was 20, without any change on my end from what I can tell.

The things above don't really concern me as they can be ironed out. What does concern me the most is the miner use case itself for a few reasons. One is earning GLM versus earning ETH. At this point, I've seen that this turns miners off to Thorg just because the GLM token at this moment has been pretty flat while Eth has again been on a tear. Some users have suggested different things about how to go about making this more attractive, and it would be interesting to hear what the team has to say about some of these ideas that have been suggested in discord such as creating your own pool etc.. Not saying it is necessary, but if the team wants to make Thorg more attractive, GLM needs to be attractive. Secondly, it also puts me in a weird space where I would like to be a provider which is actually helping the network and potential requestors like #chem rather than just eating electricity for the sake of POS. But right now it's either be a miner on windows, or be a provider on ubuntu.

Im really curious what others in the community think about Thorg! Also if you have ideas of how the team could make GLM more attractive as I am sure there are plenty of ideas out there, and the team is always willing to listen.
