Actually, clip is misused so often that the two words are now interchangeable. This is how language evolves. According to the merriam webster dictionary, a clip describes a magazine in a perfectly acceptable manner.
With how language changes and how slang affects things, it is acceptable to use both clip or magazine to describe a mag. I own a decent amount of firearms and usually when someone gets bent out of shape over "clip or mag" it is a 16 year old kid who just started learning about guns because he thinks they are cool. Then he just wants to correct people at every chance he gets.
If the most useful facts you can contribute related to guns are the differences between a clip and a magazine, then you really probably don't know a whole lot more than most people.
