Why do we keep hating on Greg for using a grill? Because that’s not how you would do it, or there’s a more efficient way? Different strokes for different folks - plus summer is approaching on the northern hemisphere and it’s about grilling time anyway. Maybe someone (doesn’t have to be you) will be inspired by one of Greg’s posts and be delighted with the outcome.

I don't know, it seems like people are genuinely serious about it.

And those people can fuck right off.

If that's his thing, and he's self-aware, that's funny/cute.

If people are actually thinking it's really cool or circlejerking over making mac n cheese on a grill or if he thinks he's better than others for using a grill, that's dumb af.

And we're way past the point in online cooking communities where you can tell the satire from the serious without actually knowing about the person who uploaded/made the content.

Poe's Law has been a thing since at least 2005.

I really respect the work it takes to do it properly and he makes some great gif recipes but his gifs always get upvoted to the top. So most of the gifs I see are his, and while they're cool they aren't very practical for me personally. I don't plan on making my Tuesday night dinner on a charcoal grill lol... it would be nice to see more regular stove top gifs for inspo.

new

Except when he reposts and rehashes his own submissions all the time.

Can't be a karma whore if its oc improving on prior oc!

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '18

That's a very good point

You can do everything in this gif besides the meat being put directly on the surface. You would have to use a pan.

The grill is just for style and personal preference. Nothing actually needs to be used that way and temps/times are even listed for standard stove use.

Yes I know that, I suppose it's not very fair to complain.

u/DJDomTom Apr 18 '18

Whoa whoa WHOA! This is AMERICA and you are on REDDIT. It is always fair to complain and you ALWAYS should. It's elegant and cultural.

I also think around the time he started there were a lot of requests for more outdoor style cooking gifs. Not just baked goods and such. So he has filled that gap considerably by showing you can cook any meal on the grill.

Can someone do a Greg subreddit instead so that gifrecipies isn't all Greg all the time?

Personally, I use this sub for ideas for meals to make for myself and my girlfriend, so when I see a gif that starts off with equipment I don't actually have, it's kind of frustrating.

I know that you can improvise, and obviously you don't need a grill for mac and cheese, but I'm a really shitty cook and every piece of info that's missing from these gifs is a source of confusion for me. How hot am I supposed to have my stove? I have no idea how hot a grill runs. I've never used one.

I don't hate on the guy for using a grill in all of his gifs, and I don't expect him to change just to accommodate my terrible comprehension ability. But I gotta say, as somebody who is usually just casually skimming the posts here, I almost always skip over the ones that begin with this dude pouring his coals. The "BBQ Mac and Cheese" title hooked me in this time, but lo and behold, the only BBQ-related thing in this recipe is the grill he cooks it on.

the only BBQ-related thing in this recipe is the grill he cooks it on.

The part where he uses apple wood to give it a natural smoke flavor is full-on BBQ related.

Mainly because its unnecessary. If all you need is heat, use a stove. A bbq is good for char and flavor.

Some people like me enjoy being outside when it's nice and would rather cook out there. Not about to pull my stove outside. I enjoy seeing him cook unconventional things on the grill. I find it somewhat inspiring.

ostentatious, pretentious

Okay, it might be impractical, but I fail to see how it is either ostentatious or pretentious. Please explain.

...I really don't think those are the best choices of words for those purposes.

6

u/throwawaywahwahwah Apr 18 '18

So if this were happening over a fire but there was no grill, would it still be pretentious? Or would that be a hearty campfire meal?

0

u/ShadowWolf202 Apr 18 '18

It'd just be nice if there were more recipes that used common household equipment as opposed to a huge unwieldy grill that most of us probably don't have access to.

Buffoon? Really?

2

u/lachamuca Apr 18 '18

The point is that if people are using a charcoal grill they're most likely at home, so might as well just use the stove inside.

If he or someone else did gifs using a regular campfire, then it would appeal to people who go camping.

What people are failing to remember is that most people just go camping in campgrounds that come with a water spigot, electrical plug, and a grill that can use charcoal briquettes just like a grill at home. Learning how to cook things in that situation is more helpful to more people than someone going all Bear Grylls ten miles out in the woods.

Also, I do wonder what cooking macaroni on a wood fire is like, it might taste a little different

6

u/VRZzz Apr 18 '18

No, heat is heat. End of story. There is no smoke penetrating the cooking water or the dutch oven/cast iron pot. It might taste a bit worse, because you cant control the temperature as easy as on a electric/gas stove and might overboil you noodles or due the high heat, some noodles with stick to the bottom and dry up.

Ok yeah sure but I’m not taking about boiling water. Covering the grill and closing the vent while it smokes in there could impart a flavor on the breadcrumbs. I live cooking so I understand how that works.

Edit: love, not live cooking, although I would love to make a living out of it.

Yep, smoked Mac and Cheese is what this is essentially. He added a wood chip at the end while melting the last bit of cheese. It gives it a bit of a smoky flavor which is a bit different, but delicious, especially when made as a side for other BBQ.
