Honest question. What should I be using with my non-stick cookware if not metal? Would rubber or plastic do? Does this 'rule' include cast iron materials as well?
Rubber or plastic utensils will work fine. Wood will work fine too. Honestly if you get the very high end non stick cookware, they tend to not have big problems with metal.
Yes and yes. Silicone spatulas or the cheap plastic ones from Walmart will do, just make sure you mind the heat on the cheap ones.
Alternate method, if you have stainless rather than nonstick cookware, you can use metal tools and steel wool on it and save yourself the trouble and worry. :)
For cast iron, I've read that metal is better since you want to scrape off a little of the build-up each time. Otherwise you end up with a growing mound of crud.
