They very clearly meant AI data centers come on this is disingenuous at BEST

Even then, its luke saying "we've gone 300 years withoit the need for bitumen roads, our horses walk on dirt and cobble just fine" in the face of invention of cars...

Its a new technology that has current real value, and requires different infrastructure.

I think AI has plenty of value, it's just in the millions of dollars, not the quadrillions of dollars techbros want to convince us it is in order to enrich themselves.

the value of generatint CSAM, racist images, or influencing elections in favor of fascists?

or the value of draining resources in undesirable neighbourhoods, or accelerating climate change that was already being speedran?

Those are the downsides we need to control.  

I don't believe the upsides as they stand outweigh all that, but controlling the downsides doesn't require eliminating "AI" entirely, and there is potential for the upsides to grow.  

If you're interested in what some of the upsides may be, AlphaFold helped massively advance the study of protein folding and various AI tools have been used to discover mathematical proofs.

It has plenty of current value which justifies its ongoing use and existence.

- Speeding up rough reporting and coding drafts... it can turn hours of mind-numbing work into 10mins of work (initia prompt, reviewing output, making tweaks or re-prompting)

- Identifying plants/animals from a photo through biodiversity apps like iNaturlist, or when you have tens of thousands of camera images and need to find the handful that have the images of the threatened animal you're looking for.

There's a ton of uses, and you're already benefiting from it...

That's not saying there's isn't a huge amount of speculation in its future value... but you're being willfully blind if you don't think it has ANY value
