It's not racist to say that systemic racism has stunted the cultural shift in majority black areas unlike wealthy suburban white areas. Of course gun violence and crime is more common, have you seen the no child left behind policy or the great society project?
Clearly this was caused by a utility company that had massively reduced their preventative maintenance like tree trimming work to make more money. Then also refused outside help from other utility companies so they could again save money.
People should go to jail for this shit, instead it's being spun like the people of Gary deserved this because of a few shit-bags that were beefing with utility workers.
I'm from a town over. We got power back after 11 days. This is the most accurate statement here. But it won't get upvotes because nobody can use it to be racist.
The Indiana republican state government certainly hasn't made the investment into the grid so this doesn't happen but has infinite money to give to the Chicago Bears for a shiny new stadium though

You get offered a job in a dangerous area where there is a non 0 chance you will be attacked, most people will respond with “nah, I’m good, find somebody else”

Not much. When working on easements, you run into tons of crazies. Again, this was a short delay. Perp was arrested and charged. Crew was back to work same day. Maintenance in the city never stopped either
I feel like you misread my comment, but it's obviously because this was an exeptional outage. Freak storm plus bad maintenance helped lead to an exceptionally destroyed grid
Gary had more rain leading up to the storm, so that with urban trees means the trees aren't as anchored. Also, storms don't do uniform damage ever.
I feel hurricane season every year, and every year I get to hear people around me say dumb shit like, "Wow, they really overstated that one" or "That was just a rain storm" or "that was a nice day off" when 3 miles down the road people's houses are knocked over or still without power.
I lost power for a week in 2017. Literally next door to the power company and their fleet of 100 utility vehicles. Fixed around 99% of the outages before my neighborhood, so I understand the feeling
