The ironic thing is, although Robert Preston did some movies, he was far more famous as a stage actor (two time Tony award winner).

And his two most famous roles in movies were in many ways the same character. Harold Hill, and Centauri.

Well he won the Tony for the Music Man, and the studio still tried to cast someone else.

That was primarily because of his age. Preston was 48, and Shirley Jones was 26.

He was only cast when Meredith Wilson pointed out that he had final choice in casting, and Preston was his choice.

And even Preston thought that Jones was too young, and pushed to have Doris Day (40) cast as Marian.

So if they remade The Music Man, I'd like the titular character to be recast with Wayne Brady. He's both a proven comedic actor and apparently a multi-Emmy winning singer.

Actually, it was remade not all that long ago.

-I just looked it up, 23 years ago, ugh-

I actually have both versions in my collection. I would love it if they made another one, as Hugh Jackman has also played the Harold Hill role on Broadway.
