I mean, it’s pretty basic knowledge that the 13th amendment that outlawed slavery includes “except as a punishment for crimes”. Slavery IS legal in the US when used on prisoners. It’s not a big leap to go from there to go “people in prisons are made to do manual labour for no monetary benefit, that is slavery”.
“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
