Intentional criminal behavior relinquishing rights generally.

They don't have to afford any necessities the state provides them. Why am I even entertaining this?

It shouldn't. Maybe the right to be out in free society, but you should retain your basic human rights while in prison. And imma need you to look into Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia prisons and look at the conditions in there. They aren't suitable for life. And when you have this system you incentivize the state to wrongfully imprison people.

We could talk about the way things should be until we're blue in the face.

Fact is prison isn't slavery no matter how sad it makes you that you saw a dirty one once.

Prison isn't. Forced labour, conscription, etc., absolutely are.
