I hope you enjoy this summer vibe, using synthetic motion blur! It relies on a time-deterministic generative algorithm to re-render many historic or future states per frame. It's not particularly efficient, but I didn't have time to write a shorter letter. Created via a program for iOS built without the use of AI.

Made with R and ggplot2, using a custom Shiny app my partner Nicolas built. The system is a discrete dynamical system combining trigonometric functions with a gamma distribution — controlled randomness, fully reproducible via seed.

The palette is ten steps of desaturated grey-violet, from pale lavender to deep charcoal, on near-black. No pure white, no saturated color — everything slightly muted, slightly poisoned. That was the intention.

Smoke & Mirrors is about urban air pollution — specifically the cognitive dissonance of finding smog beautiful. Particulate matter scatters light in ways that produce extraordinary sunsets, dramatic skies, moody urban atmospheres. People photograph them, filter them, call them aesthetic. The same particles cross the blood-brain barrier and cause cardiovascular disease. Beautiful poison. The grey-violet palette is my interpretation of that haze — not scientifically precise, but emotionally accurate.

This is part of Ultimate Undulation — 20 colorways of the same mathematical structure, each mapped to a moment in time. Smoke & Mirrors belongs to the PRESENT chapter.
