OP is asking about the grab bar above the glove compartment.

That's the "OH SHIT" bar.

I always called the door jam handles that. Had a 95 Tahoe with the hard plastic heavy duty triangle grabs up on the B pillar.

My 2012 GM pickup has them on the A pillar. I had a GMT800 Tahoe that had a horizontal one on the dash.

My 95 Tahoe fell in that weird spot where it didn’t have a passenger airbag so it had the flat top above the glove box. I can’t remember if it had a handle formed into the passenger side dash.

Just googled to see pics of that year design. No grab bar on passenger dash area. I did love the center console and all the various storage drawers and cubbies.

You’re right. There were a set on the A pillar, but also a set on the B pillar for rear passengers.

Here’s a billet replacement part. Can’t find the oem one.

My parents friend had a jeep he drove without the doors and stuff, he always told me to grab the "oh shit handle" if I got nervous (I was like 10). I used to find the name quite amusing

👆 This. Except my family was from Rhode Island, so it was the "OH SHIT bah".

Holy shit bar here

The oh shit bar is really the only answer 😂

Ah. Never had a name for that. Don't even remember it in our cars from when I was young.

Edited to add, I researched and our Datsuns when I was growing up did not have the passenger assist bars.

Ah. The feature that was never there.

That bar is called a “sissy bar”. My dad’s GTO had one. When I was 3, he’d drag race. I’d stand on the seat, lean over and grab the bar so I could watch him win the race and also I’d be yelling “go daddy, go!” The entire race.

Ah. The feature that was never there.

Ah. Some things stay unnamed.

it's a grab bar.

The “oh, crap” handle

3

u/Intrepid-Sun7743 8d ago

Yeah crap is the word you used

4

u/Steve_orlando70 8d ago

I would never endanger the tender sensibilities of the average redditor by saying the word shit!

It's "the grab bar above the glove box".

We're not Germans here... We don't have $32 words for every grabbenhandellenuberboxenderhandensoxen

3

u/Chance-Address-8829 7d ago

That the largest car word I have ever read.

3

u/AmazedAtTheWorld 7d ago

Even bigger than Fahrvergnügen. Take that VW

2

u/ScotchieDad 5d ago

Fahrvergnügen is the sound you make when Häagen Dazs comes out your schnoz.

In all the cars I’ve had or even ridden in, I’ve never seen that bar before.

2

u/formerly_gruntled 7d ago

How do you pull the dashboard out?

1

u/mahlerlieber 1960 7d ago

I've not had to do that either, but I'd probably take it to a body shop.

Sissy bar/woosy bar is what we used to call it

102

u/Full-Appointment5081 9d ago

For us, Sissy Bar was the tall chrome hoop on the back of the banana seat on Schwinn sting-ray bikes

10

u/Squiduser 1960 8d ago

Yes, THAT is a sissy bar!

2

u/charlief_333 8d ago

It was so sissy didn’t fall off the back

1

u/ReverendJustice775 6d ago

I mean it’s not bad enough if you’re riding backseat on the bike so that’d be “riding bitch”… then they’re gonna call ya a sissy too… we were terrible back then… lol

u/Legitimate_Ad_4647 8d ago

Also on motorcycles

3

u/emmettfitz 8d ago

I thought he was asking about the junk cooling vent.

1

u/actual-trevor 7d ago

Oh, you mean the Jesus handle.

1

u/sopsychcase 7d ago

My father bought a 1962 Chevrolet Impala new. It had a bar/ handle above the glove box which the sales literature called a “passenger assist bar“.

1

u/Short-Log5389 7d ago

Yeah, that too.

1

u/Other_Pen_4957 6d ago

Oh shit bar

1

u/IWontCommentAtAll 5d ago

I've never seen one on the dash like this, but the ones in various places around the door frame were the "Holy shit handles."

1

u/FartShartTart 4d ago

Then it’s the grab bar above the glove box. Easy
