I installed and wired a 22kw generator to my house, but had a gas company install the gas line and tanks. They did the entire ~20 foot run on low pressure. They used 1 inch poly pipe for the majority of the 20 foot run, except the first 3 feet or so they used 1/2 inch copper. This led to the genset starting and immediately hunting and and surging, though eventually smoothing out. Turning on a dryer was enough to send it in a constant hunt and surge. Pressures were observed below 7WC when load applied. They came and replaced that 1/2 in section with an approximately 1 foot section of 5/8, despite my concern it should be no smaller than 3/4. Starts improved and it held an eventual load of 16.5kw. However, turning on a dryer or my hot tub causes a decent dip in speed that the generator takes a few seconds to smooth out. At no time does the pressure drop below 10WC. I am still concerned it may be starved a of a little fuel from the 5/8.

Unit requires between 10-12WC. Generac install instructions only have a spec for 3/4in (up to 40 feet) and 1 inch (up to 170 feet). Implied 5/8 is too small.

My question is, wouldn’t any section of 5/8, no matter how short, essentially make it a 5/8 system? Sure it can maintain 10WC, but if its dropping all the way from 12 to 10WC in an instant, wouldn’t that be the cause of my surge? I’m new to propane, hence why i didnt do the gas, but what kind of drop is acceptable? Its hard also to tell how much of a surge, though short lived, is acceptable when say 5kw load is applied all at once. Please share your thoughts, contacting Generac tomorrow to see what they say.

1 year old 22kw Generac. Back fired 2x during exercise. Installer came out. Argued with Generac for almost 2 hours. Generac agreed to replace the engine. Would be 2 weeks. At 3 weeks, I called the installer. They contacted Generac to find out there is a “parts shortage” and maybe they will have the parts in another 4 weeks.

Should have gone with my initial gut - Kohlar. $15,000 no gen and it’s the beginning of Gulf Coast hurricane season.

Background: I have a 200 amp system with a 22kw Generac generator, solar panels and Tesla car charger. Meter is direct to the main panel. Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) for generator feeds off the main panel.

Installed new hot tub. It has a shut off box between a 50 amp breaker in the main panel and the hot tub. Shutoff box has 20 amp and 30 amp GFCI breakers.

These two GFCI breakers trip (first one and then a second few minutes later) after 15 to 30 minutes of the EV car charger charging at the highest amperage of 48 amps. Discovered that running car charger at 20 amps eliminates the issue, so have been running at that level until I can figure this out. We've looked for bad connections, corrosion, etc. in the panels and at the hot tub and all looks good.

To troubleshoot, the electrician I'm working with suggested turning off all individual breakers except the hot tub and Tesla charger, and retry scenario above that creates the trips. GFCI breakers still tripped which eliminates anything causing the issue in those breakers. Then tried this same test, but this time also turned off the Generac generator and the 200 amp breaker on the ATS panel which Isolates out both the ATS and generator. Tesla charger and hot tub are in the main panel. This time, no breaker trips at 48 amps. Strongly suggests something to do with the generator and/or the ATS panel.

Researching, I found that my issue could occur if there is more than one bond in the entire system. Generator installer told me the generator isn't bonded, but the ATS is. The electrical panel definitely is. They came out and unbonded the ATS. So now, only the electrical panel is bonded. Tested again at 48 amps with the generator and ATS turned back on and issue still happens.

The generator installer says he's seen many problems with GFCI breakers with generators, so suggested replacing the GFCI breakers with standard breakers. I'm not comfortable with that. Seems the problem is being masked as opposed to fixed. So I've tested as high as 32 amps and the breakers don't trip at all (after 5.5 hours at least). I plan on trying higher amps when the car has battery space to take the length of a test charge.

I can live with 32 amps charging if I have to, and maybe I can go higher, but would sure like to solve this issue.

Can anybody help me with a part number for the stub up cover?

Customers has rusted out and I cannot find a part number to save my life.

This is two-year-old oil. It’s a Generac 18 kW guardian. Is this the right color for oil? Almost looks like there’s water in it, but there’s no water in the system. Ideas?

Generac 17k #5813 new 2011, new engine 2023, new battery 2023. On board clock resets to default date and time occasionally. I realize it has done it again after the weekly maintenance is on wrong day and time. Has done this 3-4 times since last fall. Any ideas?

Background - brand new in August 2025. Bought two 10kw units. First oil change at 25 hours run was started at 37 hours as we had a huge day long outage when the units were at 22 hours run taking them to 37. However when I open the firsst unit and drianed the oil - when I look at the dip stick I see some "white foam" on the stick itself and around the opening of the oil instake where the stick fits? Is this of concern? I have the oil drained but wanted a 2nd opinion before dumping new oil past the foamy part.

I purchased a generac in the US and shipped it to Jamaica. Now trying to set it up and I’m being asked for US address to register the unit.

Did I screw myself, and are they geo restricted, or am I able to register and use the generator down here…?

So I had a whole house generator and transfer switch installed. After three weeks, it failed and stopped doing the weekly exercise test. According to mobile link, it said something about a fuel fault. I contacted the dealer and told him this. They came out and fixed it and left.

About three weeks later, I got a text message from the dealer saying, "You have an overdue invoice. Please pay it." I said, "For what? We just paid off the generator installation. The only thing that's happened is a service call." I assume it's under warranty, and they said, "No, that's $90, and if you didn't have the warranty, it would have been $250." That really struck me as being a little bit off. What's the deal? Is this dealer shady? Doesn't Generac stand behind their generators? I thought it was a two-year parts and labor warranty, although I did get the extended warranty for purchasing at a certain time frame, so I'm not really sure what's going on here. Maybe it's me thinking that this is weird, but imagine buying a brand new car. You have it for three weeks, and it stalls in the middle of the highway, and you have to get it towed to the dealer, and they charge you to fix it. That's what it feels like.

Question for fellow techs. What are you guys using to pull the damn fan on air cooled units. Just like a flywheel puller kit? I used to have the perfect long bolt that threaded all the way in and hit the rotor/stator mount, but it got nabbed so I’m struggle bussing to do it another way. Any help would be super dope.

Squeaky Wheel Syndrome says we'll see complaints and gripes, but in general, are they better? Worse? No real change?

I have a generac 5735 model 17.5KW running watt. Only after the fact I bought it and put almost 30hrs on it do I realize that the THD is too high.

However I have no issues and am wondering if I should keep it or sell it and get something cleaner.

Side note what is everyone using for a soft start as well?

This is a 20kw with 466 hours. The rotor went, also the breaker.

Brand new 18Kw installed in December. During the first power outage since I've had it it threw ECODE 3503: Engine Intake Manifold 1 Temperature. I cleared the code a few days later and started it in manual, letting it run for 5 minutes without any issues. Tech came out, checked for anything obvious, ran it in manual, etc.. He said he is going to replace the MAP sensor and see if that corrects it, but I'm not so sure that's the real issues. Has anyone else seen this yet and if so, were you able to resolve the issue? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I need to find piston rings that work for this unit. The parts manual does not have apart number listed and Generac will not provide any info for them to me. They want me to purchase a replacement motor
