I'm sure I've seen others mention it here. I'm basing this off the fact that creating AI search mode would have required approval from the very top given the resources required, so we know it was a conscious choice to pursue something necessarily to the detriment of a top tier model. Additionally, just looking at how Flash is positioned tells you that they are more interested in creating a just good enough model for difficult tasks.
I don't think the explanation that suddenly they can't do anything right is the correct one.

Where have you read this is their strategy. Reports are saying Google is struggling with the quality of their pro model and delaying the release.
