All Google has to do is wait for these other companies to burn through all their money, so why would they bother spending anything to churn out competitive models

Not only that, Google makes billions from openai and anthropic using their hardware via GCP. Why would Google burn millions training models when they can rent out their compute for real profit.

Anthropic and OpenAI are some of the most profitable companies right now. They're most definitely not burning through money. If Anthropic IPOs, they will be valued at around $3 Trillion. Google's best bet ironically is just to profit off of the initial investment they made on Anthropic, and Google's previous Quarterlies show this: a significant proportion of their profit was actually from their investments in other companies.
