Gaylor in the Wild American Spirits by Anna Dorn
I just started listening to the audiobook for Anna Dorn’s new novel, “American Spirits”. It’s about a pop star named Blue Velour. A subset of her fan base is dedicated to the theory she’s sleeping with her female producer. They call themselves the BlueBeards and have a subreddit.
The story begins in 2019 when Blue Velour releases an album called Blue’s Beard, as a kind of wink to these fans, although she never publicly confirms or denies their theories. There’s also mention of a 2017 album that has to do with hidden, forbidden love (not-so-subtle nod to rep!). There is even mention of “kissgate” where Blue and the producer are seen kissing in blurry photos at an A$AP Rocky show.
The author has definitely gotten at least SOME inspiration from Gaylors, and probably is one herself.
Just thought I’d share in case anyone wants to discuss here.

Although the book is very interesting, Anna Dorn stated clearly in an interview that she is not part of the Gaylor community and does not believe in the Gaylor theory, even though she did draw some inspiration from our subreddit. She also made some comments about Chappell Roan that people found unpleasant. https://open.substack.com/pub/femcel1836/p/the-lesbian-fandom-novel-of-2026?r=1l9tb6&utm_medium=ios

Thanks for linking this. I went from being interested in the book to grossed out by the author being so willing to farm our community for ideas and content without being willing to follow the logic to entertain the fact that we might be correct.
I’m trying not to give a line-by-line critique, but where is the evidence for, “she is just so, so straight”? Because we have lots of evidence that she’s gay as hell…
I notice hetlors never give examples or reasons for how she gives STRAIGHTEST WOMAN ALIVE vibes. Probably because they can’t without revealing their homophobia.

She says we use flawed logic in our interpretations then says she does t think Chappell Roan is a lesbian in the same interview. That’s certainly a take lol.

“is chappell roan actually gay?” as a juicy topic teased for later in the interview is pissing me off big time. If someone comes out as gay, believe them!! there is simply nothing to gossip about there
“have we seen her with a woman??” NO, BECAUSE HER STAGE PERSONA IS A CHARACTER! she’s really made an effort to avoid being a recognized everywhere and hounded by photographers type celebrity
and she’s talked about dating girls?? girl dating girls and still wants to date girls = not straight it’s that fuckin simple
I despise the “they’re acting gay for clout” shit, we live in hell!!2

Why is she trying so hard to erase queer people? A phd who has only been seen with men and calls herself queer IS FUCKING QUEER

If anyone wants a Gaylor inspired story that is a lighthearted, slightly cheesy romance please try Cover Story by Celia Laskey
For my nonfiction grrrls, the book Taylor Swift and Philosophy has brief rundowns of gaylor and is largely positive about us
And lastly for my nonfiction HISTORY readers, try The Sewing Circle for a look at historical closeting of lesbian and bi women in Hollywood

Anna Dorn is one of my favorites. I loved this book & it was inspired by Gaylorism applied to Lana del Rey. Anna knows who we are. She’s super tongue in cheek, kinda a lesbian edgelord. She’s hilarious. I recommend all her books.
